Sneaking candy into the theater: Frugal or cheap?

It's once again time to take a break from the heavier issues of the day, and "Frugal Dad" gave us the respite we were looking for. Ponder this one: Is sneaking your own candy into the movie theater frugal or cheap?

This is an academic exercise for us because we don't really care for movie theater candy. (We've got our eye on the popcorn with extra butter.) But it's a real-life decision for Frugal Dad, and you might be surprised at the decision he reached.

Frugal Dad originally floated this question in a forum at our partner blog Wise Bread. He described how he'd gone to the $1-a-box aisle at a discount store to stock up before going to see the film. His wife called him cheap.

"Normally, I would thank her for the compliment, but this time her comment had me thinking," Frugal Dad said.

Readers had varying opinions, both at Wise Bread and at Frugal Dad's site, and some are very entertaining. Of course, frugalists suggested he rent the DVD and watch the movie at home.

We tend to agree with Elliott of 21st Century Dad, who said, "It's a cheapskate move for sure. It's like bringing your own food to a restaurant."

Frugal Dad decided that it's not only cheap but possibly illegal to sneak your own candy inside. We are capitalists, after all, he said, and the theater owner has the right to make money from candy sales.

If you want to save money, don't eat the candy. If you can afford it, go ahead and live large. "In the grand scheme of things, a box or two of movie candy or a large tub of popcorn is really not going to make or break us," he said.

The problems I have with the candy  sold at movie theatres are lack of variety and huge portion sizes.  I like to bring candy that I actually enjoy eating to a movie theater, and i usually get a reasonable amount, so that I don't find that i've eaten a pound of chocolate m&m's in two hours.  If the exact product that I bring into a theatre were actually sold in the theatre, then I would say that sneaking candy into a theater is cheap---otherwise, it's just smart :)

With the horrible state of the economy the movie industry should be happy to even have us willing to pay close to 10 dollars to see a movie.  If I want to have a bag of candy in my pocket from somewhere else I feel thats my right.

As a diabetic, there is no sugar-free candy I can purchase from the theatre.  They have diet soda but no candy, so what am I to do?

My wife  and I have just started sneaking snacks & bottled drinks into the movie theater. Movies have gotten out of hand for prices nowadays (just like everything else!) & the movie snack bar is even worse! Almost $4.00 for a little box of candy, and $4.00 for a soda? Let's get real here! My wife just got a"theater purse" so we can bring in our own stuff. $2.00 for a big box of candy & $1.00 for a bottled soda at Walmart is a better price than $8.00 at the movies.

I HAVEN'T BEEN TO A THEATER IN YEARS. I CAN TAKE A BREAK, WITH A DVD AND STOP IT AND RESUME WITHOUT MISSING ANY THING. ALSO ENJOY ANYTHING IN THE FRIDGE ETC.THE MONEY THAT I SAVE WILL PAY FOR BUYING THE DVD, AND I WILL HAVE IT FOREVER. IT IS MINE.

If the theatre's would lower their prices on the candy people would buy more. Also the popcorn. They buy most of the popcorn already popped and just warm it up and put that gassly imatation butter on the popcorn. Also the pop they make a killing on it. Half the container is full of ice and maybe 25 cents worth of pop and the container cost 10 cents I know they have to pay their employee's at min wage. You pay 15.00 for pop and popcorn, that is more than the darn ticket. I may sound cheap but I am tried of being ripped off. So I just rent a video or buy a movie on line for 3.99 and relax in my own home.

If I want to see a movie on the big screen( maybe 1 time a year) yes I take my own snacks in, but my husband buys the popcorn and complains later that he stomach hurts, but he suffers because he likes the smell and taste ugh!!

Not only do I bring my own candy, but I have snuck hamburgers, chips  and capri suns into the movie theater so my kid wont bug me for the overpriced items they sell.

Hey, the cost of the movie is high enough. Imagine you going to the movies with a family of 5 on a saturday night, by the time you buy the tickets you've spent on an average of $48.00. Add in popcorn, drinks, and candy and youve spent another $22.00. People that's $70.00 for the movies and that's a doggone shame. Who can afford to go these days, thank God for the dollar theater. Still I think you should bring your own snack in if you can, at least you'll be able to get what you really want.

I's up to each individual as to weather they do or don't...no one has the right to say you should or shouldn't( see palaza theatre vs. jones new york st. federal law cases...1977)  grow up morons

Where movie theatres are overcharging for snacks how can you not? It's like gas prices only popcorn. Come on now get real....$5.00 for a small popcorn? We all know what the profit is! It now cost about $75.00 for 2 kids and 2 adults plus popcorn, drinks and candy and that's a matinee.I love the theatre experience but maybe they would get more to go again if they lessened their profit margin just a little and people wouldn't sneek candy in.It's not being cheap to sneak in your own candy, just smart. I don't have kids but I take my girlfriends. They always want candy, popcorn, soda and I hate to say no as that is part of the whole theatre experience. They never eat it all so it is a waste of money and the food. The theatres need to get real and stop being greedy so family's can once again afford to go and enjoy it all!
