Buy one home and get a second one free

The grocery shopper's beloved BOGO -- buy one, get one (free) -- has moved into the realm of home sales. Yes, home sales. In yet another sign of how anxious sellers have become in today's housing market, a San Diego real estate developer has offered a free $400,000 row home to anyone who buys one of his estate homes starting at $1.6 million.

"We want to reduce our inventory," Mark Connal, a vice president at Michael Crews Development, told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "We're prepared to bite the bullet. ... Right now, every builder I know is selling houses at less than it costs to build them."

Another company official, Dawn Berry, was quoted by a San Diego TV station: "We thought, 'Why does it just have to be on Pop-Tarts and restaurants? Why not buy one home, get one free.'" Of course, you'll have to pay property taxes on both.

The houses available for $1.6 million and up are gated estate homes in the San Pasqual Valley. The row homes, in Escondido, once sold for $540,000, according to the Union-Tribune.

A flier at the developer's Web site says, "It's never been done before and may never be done again!" The flier and a post at the company's blog say the offer was good through May 31.

A blog post at L.A. Land about the promotion generated plenty of comments. For instance, reader Greg said: "This is great! It will give me somewhere to park the free SUV I'll get with the purchase of my new hybrid." "steve in k.c." said: "May I default on the first one and then still keep the second one? Thanks in advance. Honey, get the kids, and load the van ... we're moving."

EXCELLENT IDEA Mia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  My guess is that the 400,000 isnt totaly a loss for the builder.  Some of that is recouped in the 1.6 mil.

I too enjoy the Extreme Makeover show.  I have yet to finishing watching an episode  with a dry eye.  Those folks are quite deserving and am happy for such generosity.  It gives one hope that the USA still isn't totally predatory towards it's own.

I try to patronize the companies that donate their wares on the show.  I wrote the compaines and told them so as well in an effort to bolster their good tidings

I agree with Mia b. The GREED in this country is out of control and it starts with General Bush and Corporal Klinger(Chaney).

This offer is obviously not intented for you, but it's not to say this is not a good idea. So why the snide comments? Just because someone is rich and can afford $1 mil house does not mean they are greedy. I think it's a great way to move inventory. At least the builder is willing to take a loss in the short term. The person receiving the free home can do with it what they please; rent it or give it away. Either way is fine. What does all of this have to do with someone who lost their home? They may have lost their home but does that mean they shouldn't pay for where they are linging? Your commnet sounds a little socialist.

Mia, If you were rich enough then fine do it, but expecting the wealthy(people who have made good decisions in their life) to pay for those that have made bad ones isn't a fair system. You could always let someone live with you for free. They could sleep on the floor and it wouldn't cost you much. Do you take tax write-offs on your income tax?... Why?  Because you do not want to pay taxes, so please don't expect others to do what you do not really want to do. Sure it sounds nice, but where do you draw the line? Perhpas we give everyone a house, a car, cable tv, a cell phone, etc. and limit everyone's income to say $0.00. Just give it all to the gov't so they can redistribute the wealth. By the way I am not wealthy and do not expect them to bail me out my situation. Also, if you take all the money from the wealthy, who is going to innovate and keep this country developing?... the guy that can't hold a simple job or the crack addict, or the drop-outs.

It seems the rich are getting everything on the back of the middle class working pawns. What % of the population can afford a $1.6 million house Further more, how many can pay $400,00 for a row house. If housing hadn't become a speculative market instead of shelther, maybe this would not come to pass at all. Krisitna

why all of a sudden in our society is GREED associated with capitalism. You hear it evey day with "Big Oil" If it were not for big oil we would not be able to drive our cars. Big oil produces what is in demand.  There profits are pretty low compared to the Govornment profit from TAX and they dont lift a finger

It is capitalism people!! untill we get Obama in office then we move toward socialism! See hou you like things then.

take a home equity line on the second home and use that to pay the first. When the market comes back both homes will be worth more and you would have been paying a smaller amount of payments all along.  Does that sound familiar. thats how everyone got in trouble.

As a potential buyer ,this would indicate to me that the 1.6 million house could be bought for approx. 400,000 less.

forgot the buy one get one  free idea just help familys in need and get  the foreclosure market down  but everyone is about the bottom line and yet you have to buy a house that is 1.6 million dollars yeah okay that is a good one why dont we try to help america first and make our economy better and lwer everything and make the market better lower gas price and make everything better but you got to love corprate amercia  i dont care you can email or write me cayca@psouth.net i can voice my mind i know i am going to lose my house because i lost 2 incomes and there is nothing i can do and there is noone willing to help me me no refi company no loans hell i was even looking for loan sharks think i could find one nop
