Sales of 20-ounce soft drinks are worse than flat

Maybe the preaching of frugalists has finally been heard, or people have found their common sense or have less money -- but fewer are buying those overpriced 20-ounce bottles of Coca-Cola and other Coke-brand drinks dispensed by vending machines and convenience stores.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. reduced its second-quarter earnings outlook based on weaker-than-expected sales of that size. The WSJ says:

Sold in corner groceries, vending machines and other outlets since the early 1990s, soft drinks in 20-ounce plastic bottles revitalized U.S. sales for Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Inc. by getting Americans to drink larger servings. Because they are often sold at prices similar to a two-liter bottle, they have also been highly profitable for the companies' bottlers.

Not just Coke has been affected. The WSJ reports that sales of what's known as "pop" in Montana and Southwestern PA (that's Pennsylvania for people not from that commonwealth) dropped 3.5% in the first quarter of 2008, and 4.2% in convenience stores alone, where the 20-ounce bottle ruled. Coke and PepsiCo Inc. are now testing the public's acceptance of smaller bottles.

How many times have you read a personal-finance blog that urged you to save money by drinking water -- and not the bottled kind? Get a filtration system, if you must, and refill your to-go bottle. Our partner blogger Trent Hamm at The Simple Dollar adds that if you drink a big glass of water before a meal, you'll eat less, saving money and reducing calorie flow down the old pie hole.

Don't give THE OPRAH that much credit.  People are finally figuring out that they're throwing away precious money. Money that could go elsewhere. -- Like the gas tank, where we're also being taken on a regular basis!

What I do now, is get free ice from Quick Trip or Racetrac with my own container.  Compared to Soda.  I have no air in my car and I live in Georgia, it's hot, so hot.  The ice melts, plus I can munch on it while I drive.  I've cut way back on soda drinking.  I keep a pitcher of water in my frige also.

When we go to any fast food, we order the small or medium drink that comes with the value meal (because of the free refills )but then again you can order the ala carte and much cheaper with the dollar menu if you don't need the fries. Just order $menu burgers or chicken sandwich and large iced tea ( cost $2+tax)

I haven't had a soda in almost three years thanks to my diet program and nagging from my dentist, but I remember the "good old days"  of smaller portions when your choices were a 10oz bottle, 12 ounce can, or the "big" 16 oz bottle.  Talk about the supersizing of America...

Drink Water... healthy and cheap!

lol omfg wtf.  gtfo..

Well I buy fountain drinks. They're cheaper and I can't stand to have soda without ice. McDonald's here has the large for $.89 as well.

Jiim -- Well said.

Sun Tea is REAL cheap , easy to make & no sugar or aspartame. Same kick as cafiene without the cafiene. Can't buy it from a vending machine or at Mickey D's though...

Try asking for your drinks without ice at places like Mc D's.  They are already cold and instead of a small drink and a cup full of ice,for the large size price, you get the size you asked for drink. AND ,,, if you are headed home anyway, you could always add ice to it when you get home, saves your drink from turning to water colas!!
