Will someone please buy my SUV

As the price of gas goes up, many people's desire to own a big honking SUV heads south. And so may be the value of that SUV sitting in your driveway.

A growing number of SUV owners are finding that they owe more on their vehicles than they're now worth. And those folks are going to have a heck of a time getting rid of them at a satisfactory price.

This from CNN:

Owners might owe $20,000 or more when the vehicle is now worth $12,000. It's similar to an upside-down mortgage, and it may not make sense to try a trade-in. "What they might be doing is spending thousands of dollars to save hundreds," says Jack Nerad, the executive director of Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "Because if you make a trade, you're most often going to spend more to make that move than you would just sucking it up and paying the extra gasoline prices."

Behind the Wheel blogger Phil LeBeau writes about an SUV-owning friend who can't find a buyer at a price the friend will accept. Phil says, "He's not alone. ... As one dealer on the East Coast told me, 'Selling an SUV now is about as tough as it was to sell a compact car in the late '90s when sport utes were red hot.'"

What's going on here?

A recent AAA survey found that fuel economy is now consumers' top consideration when buying a car, and the huge growth in sales of compact and subcompact cars demonstrates that. (Last time we checked, AAA said gas had surpassed $4 a gallon in seven states.)

Factor in supply (lots of SUVs for sale) with demand (people don't want them). The craigslist blog said in late April that listings in the "cars and trucks" category and for RVs were up 120% and 100%, respectively, from eight months earlier.

Plus, to inject a little humor here, driving a gas guzzler is a turnoff. "What do women find sexy? Hybrids. They're chick magnets," writes Chuck Squatriglia at Wired. "So says a survey by General Motors that found nearly nine in 10 women would rather talk to a guy in a Prius than a Porsche."

What should you do? Keep your gas hog, as Nerad of kbb.com suggests, and find ways to reduce your gas consumption. If you can unload your gas guzzler, try to reduce the damage by replacing it with a small used car. You don't want to end up like blogger "SingleGuyMoney," who kept rolling what he owed on his previous car into the loan for each new car -- essentially creating a monster 12-year car loan. Congrats to him for recently paying it off.

Boy am I glad I leased instead of financing my truck. Can't wait till the lease is over, I expect the dealership to come up with penalties or some fees, since it's highly unlikely that I would buy or lease another large pickup truck, but it sounds better than to owe more than what the darn thing is worth.

Pardon me while i cry for all the morons who purchased the GAS GUZZLING EGO FEEDERS and now can't afford the gas.  Don't worry you'll still look "cool' sitting in your driveway because you have no money to gas up your image mobiles and your neighbors will still  think you're a trendy *** or macho moron. Your days of destroying the planet and endangering other people's lives in smaller more sensible cars are over.

DEK you are an idiot!

I always laughed at people who claim they need a truck or SUV to tow or haul things with. Most of these people do not tow or haul on a daily basis but like one to two times a year. Also, when it comes time for work they do not want to get their baby dirty. Why not just rent a truck or SUV when needed. I myself as a 34 year old guy do not understand why anyone of my friends like thse awful things especially the single guys. They are crude and unpleaseant to drive. If you want a big comfortable car go Cadillac like I have or if you want sporty go Corvette. If someone wants to flush money down the toliet on thse poor handling uncomfortable and ugly things be my guest.

Oh mann... well, I have to add to this.  I bought my (whew) SMALLISH SUV (Ford Explorer Sport) over 6 years ago, when things weren't as dire.  I've paid this thing off, and I'm not ABOUT to take on another car payment.  I'm just going to buck up and pay what it costs, and when I can, take public transportation.  Sigh...

I really get a kick out of parents who own these big SUV's which causing more gas to be used up so they can live the "American Dream".  That way, when there kids grow up in a world of no trees or have to buy your fresh air, they can really look back and appreciate their SUV's.  To see that a so called parent would say they got the SUV to protect their kids are full of dung.  You mean as a parent you don't care if you hit another car and kill someone else's kid.   People like that will get whats coming to them when they back out and run over their own child.

Another thing, I didn't make you have 3+ kids.  Keep you legs closed and get a smaller car.  I can't stand to her parents use a kid as a reason to buy a big SUV that gets 14 miles-per-gallon.

They should have a $1200 to $2000 a year tax on these big SUV's as a gas hog tax.   Then limit the miles you can put on them to 12000 per year or pay a penalty tax.  The money can be used to come up with new fuel alternatives, help keep prices down for fuels or to save the enviroment.

There are many ways to cut back on fuel, like buying American products, shop locally, walk your lazy obese ass to the store next time, have you fat kids walk with you.  I have yet to see a child overweight that was not caused by their parents feeding them cups of ranch, ketup, honey mustard, sweets, fast food, etc.  STOP KILLING YOUR OWN KIDS!

Just so everyone knows, I use public transit, don't own a car, walk and carpool when possible.

Wake up America. What does gas need to go up to $7/gallon for people to stop buying SUVS. I am tired of hearing people they have children (1 or 2 kids) andf then driving to work in there GMC Suburban or Lincoln Navigator. In the 1970s noone drove these pieces of gas guzzling garbage now people need them give me a break. Only people who work in businesses ever needed trucks. Trades people DuH!!!!!!!!  We didn't need these oversdized vehicles in the 70s we don't need them now. People who drive SUVS and don't need them either suck up the prices and shut your mouths or sell your pieces of garbage. Its time to put up or shut up. Idiots. By the way George Bush you suck.

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer a 2002 Saturn SL and a 1998 Jeep Wrangler.  I use the Explorer as a family vehicle when I go out with my family or for shopping. My wife uses the Saturn SL to work everyday and I use my Jeep. I have no problem paying for gas. Seems that most of the ppl are jealous of SUV owners. I paid cash for all my cars.. my house is paid off, along with  my other investment properties which I paid for in cash. I have no issue paying for gas even when it hits $7 a gallon. Seems that most of you people have been over extending yourself and buying 'toys' you cannot afford to buy or maintain! Actually went on a 1000-mile road trip for Memorial day and was pleasantly surprised to see no traffic delays.

js1720, your big truck and SUV are what would kill people in the small gas-saving cars when you get into an accident with others.  Because of your child safety concern, you kill people who can't afford the big car.  Your post sounds like you can live with that conscience.

the only bright spot i see in this situation,[for  me personally,at least],is my mid-size sport ute is ,paid off,and  is in exellent condition,,,and is decent on gas, compared to a suburban or a hummer,,,,i could very easily trade it for a more economical vehicle, but would it be worth it???i.e car payment, higher insurance,AND fuel????i don't think so,,,,many people in this country are carrying  way too much debt,,,that makes high gas prices hurt that much more...we need now ,more than ever to focus on getting ourselves OUT OF DEBT<<<<car loans, credit cards, mortgages,,,,etc,,,you'll sleep MUCH better @nite............
