Will someone please buy my SUV

As the price of gas goes up, many people's desire to own a big honking SUV heads south. And so may be the value of that SUV sitting in your driveway.

A growing number of SUV owners are finding that they owe more on their vehicles than they're now worth. And those folks are going to have a heck of a time getting rid of them at a satisfactory price.

This from CNN:

Owners might owe $20,000 or more when the vehicle is now worth $12,000. It's similar to an upside-down mortgage, and it may not make sense to try a trade-in. "What they might be doing is spending thousands of dollars to save hundreds," says Jack Nerad, the executive director of Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "Because if you make a trade, you're most often going to spend more to make that move than you would just sucking it up and paying the extra gasoline prices."

Behind the Wheel blogger Phil LeBeau writes about an SUV-owning friend who can't find a buyer at a price the friend will accept. Phil says, "He's not alone. ... As one dealer on the East Coast told me, 'Selling an SUV now is about as tough as it was to sell a compact car in the late '90s when sport utes were red hot.'"

What's going on here?

A recent AAA survey found that fuel economy is now consumers' top consideration when buying a car, and the huge growth in sales of compact and subcompact cars demonstrates that. (Last time we checked, AAA said gas had surpassed $4 a gallon in seven states.)

Factor in supply (lots of SUVs for sale) with demand (people don't want them). The craigslist blog said in late April that listings in the "cars and trucks" category and for RVs were up 120% and 100%, respectively, from eight months earlier.

Plus, to inject a little humor here, driving a gas guzzler is a turnoff. "What do women find sexy? Hybrids. They're chick magnets," writes Chuck Squatriglia at Wired. "So says a survey by General Motors that found nearly nine in 10 women would rather talk to a guy in a Prius than a Porsche."

What should you do? Keep your gas hog, as Nerad of kbb.com suggests, and find ways to reduce your gas consumption. If you can unload your gas guzzler, try to reduce the damage by replacing it with a small used car. You don't want to end up like blogger "SingleGuyMoney," who kept rolling what he owed on his previous car into the loan for each new car -- essentially creating a monster 12-year car loan. Congrats to him for recently paying it off.

We Americans wanted the over sized gas guzzling SUV, now we should pay for the gas. It's time for people to shop with their wallets and not their egos.

Can a person making minimum wages and working 40 hours a week be able to afford a car atall?  The real problem is that the dollar is weak, then the gas prices are up, then the price of getting food to the table due to distribution costs are higher, the cost of food world wide has gone up atleast 100%.  No one in their right mind will buy a SUV for daily commute and use, it is like accepting an Elephant as a gift, How are you going to feed this big monster?  The only way to stabilize the oil prices is to take the speculation out of it, so that the person speculating on prices is made to take deliveries of the oil, rather than playing with numbers.  The Congress is full of oil interests, so these attorneys know where their fees come from, they will do nothing, just talk, promise and deliver their key note speeches.

Most people would easily get by with a small/medium 2/4 door car.I wish that one can get a larger station wagon that is relatively fuel efficient. Chevy Impala, new Ford Taurus, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry/Avalon in station wagon form would be very nice. None of those presently can be acquired in station form. Just large, gas guzzling SUV's. YUK!

In Europe, one can get the equivalent of the Honda Accord in station wagon form. Other cars too in station form. Volvo, Mercedes, BMV make larger size station wagons for the USA market, but they are expensive!

I am not complaining about the person who really needs a pickup/SUV. People that really need the ground clearance/4 wheel drive for heavy winters, etc. Also, people in the trades that need the truck for their work. Someone who commutes to/from work where the weather is usually decent (like here in LA where I live) don't really need the SUV.

well frankdel, why don't you get a ford focus wagon? they have plenty of room for cargo!

I'm all for buying what you want and need but I've seen too many people buy these big SUVs because their friends were buying them, not because they wanted or needed them. Does a single person who never goes off road really want a big 4X4? But I think this comes back to us  not thinking our purchases through. We need to think for ourselves and not allow advertising and other people to think for us.

People might want to keep those SUVs the way things are going, people might be living in them soon enough.  The mobile homes of the future, though not by choice.

Think twice before loosing approx 5k on the trade in of your suv and the impending 5k overpayment of the likley crossover or other "popular" cars dealers are selling at top dollar and no discounts. The 8k to10k "transition" will certainly purchase you alot of gasoline!

Most only own SUV’s (especially the largest) to project the pretension of an active, sophisticated lifestyle. Never mind the economic problems associated with these gas guzzlers. More important now, for us and our children, is the environmental mess we are leaving behind. Doesn’t anyone think about their role in producing these problems? It can no longer be me, me, and me. We are ruining this planet with these filthy hydrocarbon burning monsters.

I laugh my ass off everytime Joe macho man big ego pulls up in his suburban war machine (Hummer) to fill up!

Get ready America! We will now see what the auto maker come up with the new technolegy of Hybrids,Hydrogen,Solar, and new gas and diesel super efficient compurtized fuel distribution systems. As a result of fuel prices, goverment mandated regulations, will demand 30 mpgs + for all vehilces made in the US!
