What busts your budget?

We all have those items that tempt us to overspend. For some, like Amy at My Daily Dollars, it's shoes. For others, it's video games. For us, it's anything with a Steelers logo on it and travel.

Many personal-finance bloggers have shared theirs -- after being tagged by the "five budget busters" meme. While some wrote about treats like eating out, others said the necessities of life are busting their budgets.

The blogger at Thriftiness Becomes Us has a high-deductible health insurance plan and no dental coverage. She wrote, "DH and I have a 'put out the fire' mentality with our own dental care. That can get expensive once in a while. We save all year for our kids' dental visits, which are much more important than our own."

Lynnae at Being Frugal mentioned gasoline. Now that it's kids soccer season, they're driving to a neighboring town six times a week.

Sometimes our attempts at frugality can get us in a rut. Carlie Faulk at Why Ask Why cited resale shops and clearance racks. And then there are her kids: "'Can I have a dollar for a snack after practice?' 'Mom, my jeans are really short. Are you supposed to be able to see my socks?' ... 'Mom, I'm thirsty and hungry. How much longer till dinner?' Etc., etc., etc., etc. You get the idea," she wrote.

Aryn at Sound Money Matters said her husband busts her budget, particularly with weekday lunches with co-workers. She wrote: "Then there are the times when they change plans on the way to the restaurant and he finds himself in a steakhouse paying $40 for lunch, and then hitting happy hour later for another $20. That's two-thirds of my grocery budget for the week."

Vh at Funny about Money included house maintenance, her aging German shepherd, $75 hair cuts, and Costco on her list. "There's only one way to survive a Costco run with your budget intact: Wear blinders," she wrote.

The fast-food drive-through is the Achilles' heel of Ana at DebtFREE-Revolution, followed by $5 DVDs at Wal-Mart ("a DVD for less than a movie theater ticket!" she said) and day-old stuff on sale in the bakery department.

Cindy S at Oh My Aching Debts, who started this meme, listed her kids, eating out while shopping, sodas on road trips, and late and overdraft fees.

Some bloggers found the meme helpful. "We all have stuff floating around in our heads, but when you write it down, take an honest look at it staring you in the face, it becomes reality and you have to make a choice about it. You can ignore it or do something about it," wrote ChouChou at Debt Non Sequitur.

ChouChou listed organic foods, home-schooling and kids' books, travel and Starbucks caramel frappuccino, and added, "Hello, my name is ChouChou, and I am addicted to buying shoes."

I've gotten better at stuff with Steelers logos on them.  My parents always know to get me some Steelers gear for gifts so that helps.  The in-laws have gotten the word as well (since they have put a moratorium on appliances as gifts).

My budget buster was for the longest time Starbucks coffee. Each cup ran me 4.87 and also gave me an additional 350+ calories. Now I've switched to regular coffee which costs less than half, since Starbucks came out with the Pike blend It's much better. Now if I can just curb the impulse extra items at the gas station when I run out for milk I'll be good to go!

I curse the day I discovered the bargain-hunting and "deal of the day" websites like slickdeals.net, woot.com, and the Amazon.com Gold Box.  Most of the time, I don't even know I "want" something until one of these sites offers it at a discount.

My latest ridiculous indulgence was 2 cases of Sun Chips from Amazon - 120 single-serving bags in total.  Sure, it was a great price, and sure, I like Sun Chips, but come on!  How are my wife and I supposed to eat 120 bags of chips between now and July, when they expire?  Now we've become the Sun Chips Fairies, giving bags away to friends and family, who are always appreciative and slightly confused.

I'm mostly successful in avoiding the siren song of these sites, but every now and then, out comes the credit card, and there goes my budget.

Very true. If one were to save all of their receipts for even just a week and add them up per store they'll be real surprised....$75 weekly at Jack in the Box for me. However, simply cutting the size of what I get (small vs large) has saved me $35 weekly and I've dropped 20lbs. ;-)

Cookbooks and cookwares!  They are irresistible.  I have four waffles irons and almost 2000 cookbooks, for example.  My husband is retired (a better word for being laid-off) so I assign him a task of selling them on e-bay.

Tell Chou Chou to explore Coverdell accounts for her home-schooling/books..at least the withdrawals & growth are tax-free

I have many friends who have hosted "shopping" parties for jewelry, food products, make-up/lotions, and on and on.  I have made the mistake of falling into their marketing ploys that offer half price after a certain level of purchases.  No longer!!  I now have an expensive lotion that my husband thinks stinks.  I also purchased a ring that turned out a much different shade of the display ring.

I am no longer weak to their marketing ploys and will just avoid those parties in the future!

I have a thing for Ferraris.  I cant seem to have enough of them.  Everytime I see one I just have to have it.  Out pops the checkbook, and out flies 6 figures from my bank account.  You'd think 57 of them would be enough, but nope.

hey nate, next time you feel that italian stallion urge, whip out your checkbook and write a six figure check to habitat for humanity and give a hundred world citizens a home.

hey Nate, maybe you should sell those 57 ferraris and donate to a local animal shelter or help  feed starving children in africa. that, hunny will never lose value.
