Celebrity foreclosures: Oh, how the mighty have fallen

Former baseball star Jose Canseco is walking away from his 7,300-square-foot mansion in a Los Angeles suburb. But did you know he's only the latest celebrity who has faced foreclosure?

In fact, the Los Angeles Times blog L.A. Land has an occasional feature called "Celebrity Foreclosures," and so far has written about such notables as Canseco and Marion Jones. The most recent installment includes suggested headlines about Canseco like "Jose walks" and "Canseco took a walk, but was called out at home."

Luxist has a gallery of celebrities who have faced the possibility of losing property, including former NBA star Latrell Sprewell, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Courtney Love and Michael Madsen. You can find a celebrity foreclosures tag at Foreclosure.com.

The Wall Street Journal reported this about Canseco: He bought the Encino mansion in 2005 for about $2.8 million. "The house already had at least one lien placed on it, from the Internal Revenue Service, and a judgment stemming from a 2005 court ruling in which Mr. Canseco and his brother Ozzie were found liable for a 2001 brawl in a Miami Beach nightclub," the newspaper said. "Together, the liens and judgment totaled some $1.3 million," according to Canseco's attorney, Gregory Emerson, and Tina Cameron, Canseco's real estate agent.

"Given that there were liens on the house and the market had gone down, he made the decision to let it go," Emerson told the newspaper.

We know it's difficult to feel sympathy for people who have made millions. In Canseco's case, two costly divorces must have hurt.

"You know my life, this financial thing, is a very complicated issue. Obviously, when you make all that money, people think, 'OK, let's assume it is $35 million.' People have to understand that $35 million, you're paying the government 41%," he told "Inside Edition" this week. "That leaves you with about $17 (million) or $18 million, not even. Then you're taking care of your whole family."

To tom:

foreclosures are a matter of PUBLIC RECORD.  Open ANY local newspaper and you'll see NEW foreclosures added daily.  The paper will publish the NAMES of the forclosee and a description of the property.

My neighbors home is being sold this THURSDAY at the courthouse.  They paid only $74,000 for the property, but because of fees, interest rates, and whatever fee the bank could think to add to their principle, they now owe $87,000+.  They have lived in the house for 7 years and paid over $30,000 in payments, but when the ARM kicked in and they tried to refinance the bank HAD NO INTEREST IN HELPING.

That's one reason why the 'average' person has NO SYMPATHY for celebrity or wealthy people getting foreclosed upon.    They have banks OFFERING to refinance, yet someone who WANTS to stay in their home and ASKS for help CAN'T EVEN GET IT.  NO HELP FROM CONGRESS, either.

So, tom, suck it up and drive on.  EVERYTHING is public.  Even for the 'little' people, just no one wants to hear about our stories.

did anyone read the part where it said that 41 percent of his annual pay goes to the govt?i make 30,000 annually and dont pay any where near his percentage.so yea,he makes millions but loses half to the govt.i think i will stick to my 30,000 a year.i wont work harder to take home less.do the math and you would fell sorry for him.

WOW THE AVERAGE AMERICAN WILL BARELY MAKE 1 MILLION DOOLARS IN COURSE OF THER WORKING LIFETIME I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR SOMEONE WHO CANNOT MANAGE MILLIONS OF DOOLARS MY FAMILY AND I ARE TRYING TO GET BY ON ABOUT 1300 A MONTH

Jose forget the mention the millions he spent on exotic sports cars he owned over the years, which included Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches, and Jaguars.  He was previously married to a former Playboy playmate, formerly live in a mansion located in the most exclusive area of Miami, and has lived a very rich life so I don't feel sorry for him.

That $17 million is easy to live off of, if it's invested in a hedge fund or other investments. These people just don't have any good financial planing.

Does anyone need more Kleenex while I'm up getting a refill on my maudlin beer?

Canseco who?

Life is truley beautiful!  I wish I had 18 million or so to play with or I mean feed my family!  "I play baseball for a living!"  Hey, I work 12 hours or so every day for a real living, Canseco, know how to do that?  I guess not. That's why my family still has a roof over their heads and food to eat.  Did I mention I'm a woman?  Try doing that man!

YES, I AGREE WITH ALL OF YOU ON NOOOOO.. SYMPATHY FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS ONLY 17M TO 18M.  OH, WHAT I COULD DO WITH HALF THAT MONEY!

I think he should share his wealth with all us low income americans! Absolutely no sympathy here!
