Strange but true story: She walks in LA

In a post called "WWFD? (What would Frodo do?)," Arduous of Arduous Journey tells a most amazing story. She lives in car-crazed Los Angeles, and she walks. (We'll get back to Frodo in a minute.)

She acknowledges how strange this is. "In LA, if the only parking spot is three blocks away, it means you should probably just valet," she says about routine behavior.

In fact, she's hoofing it about 70 minutes a day. "The rest of my commute (via subway and bus) takes about half an hour each way, just five minutes longer than my drive would be," she adds.

What are the benefits? She looks and feels great, and has a tan that wasn't sprayed on. She doesn't drive to an $80-a-month gym to walk on a device "that seems more suited to hamsters than humans," she writes. She smells the jasmine in the morning air.

What's this have to do with Frodo Baggins? Some geek calculated that the distance from Frodo's home in the Shire to Mordor, where Frodo needed to toss the ring into Mount Doom, was 1,841.8 miles. Frodo covered it mostly on foot.

"So, the next time you are about to jump in your car on an errand, take a moment to think to yourself, what would Frodo do?" she writes. "The answer is, he'd probably walk. And you should too."

WWFD? I like that.

A  New Yorker friend of mine visited L.A. once about 30 years ago and decided to take a walk like she did back home; a police car stopped to see what was wrong with her!

If everyone walked or biked for errands close to home there would be several things that happen:

1) People would lose weight

2) People would be healthier and happier

3) Gas prices would not be as big an issue

4) Car maintenance would go down

5) People would actually be able to save money for fun activities

6) Shoes would become less expensive (Rule of Demand)

7) Car accidents would go down

8) Roads would be improved for walking or biking

9) Compulsive buying would go down (Not much you can carry if walking or biking)

10) Improvement for the environment on a global scale

In case you are wondering, I do ride my bike or walk when running errands close to home. As a treat and a family activity we ride to the icecream store, eat, and then we ride back home without gaining any weight. Under these standards you can eat whatever you want.

how wright you are I just walk to the jewel foods every day to buy what I needed for dinner because I like fesh vegs and fruit

Just like ojo's friend that walked & got stopped by the police to see "what was wrong," that happens in my Midwest community as well.  There is something rather sad, when you are seen as odd or distressed, when choosing to walk!

I lived for 5 years in LA with no car - walked and took the bus everywhere. It CAN be done.
