Sam's Club, Costco are rationing rice

Shades of World War II: Two warehouse-type retail chains in the United States are rationing rice as anxious customers stock up because of a worldwide shortage.

It's the most startling sign that the world food crisis is making itself felt in the United States. But, despite rising food prices here, we've still got it good compared with some developing countries, where food shortages and price hikes have sparked deadly riots.

"Based on a very rough analysis, we estimate that a doubling of food prices over the last three years could potentially push 100 million people in low-income countries deeper into poverty," World Bank president Robert B. Zoellick said recently. He has called for a "New Deal for Global Food Policy."

Likely because of customer hoarding, Sam's Club has imposed a limit on bulk purchases of rice. Customers can purchase no more than four 20-pound or larger bags of jasmine, basmati and long-grain white rice per visit. (A similar move is not planned for other Wal-Mart-owned stores.) Some Costco stores have imposed restrictions on bulk sales of rice and flour.

This prompted Baltimore Sun blogger Jay Hancock to write: "Food hoarding in the United States? Rice-purchase controls at Sam's Club? Get ready to unfurl your rationing coupons and plant a Victory Garden. What is the world coming to?"

The price of rice rose 10% last month in the U.S., which exports about half of its rice crop and where the supply is stable. Not so in the rest of the world.

U.N. World Food Program executive director Josette Sheeran said the price of rice has more than doubled in seven weeks. At a London conference on the world food crisis, she warned of a "silent tsunami" that threatens 20 million poor children, according to The Associated Press.

The AP says it's the "first global food crisis since World War II." Why is this happening? Experts blame high fuel costs, an emphasis on biofuels to the detriment of food production, extreme weather, and changing diets in India and China. Some rice-producing countries have also cut back on exports.

According to the AP, "Evolving diets among burgeoning middle classes in India and China will help double the demand for food -- particularly grain-intensive meat and dairy products -- by 2030, the World Bank says."

WE should just for one week not buy from China and India.  They have ruined the world with them munpulating there money. Maybe bring manufacturing back to the UNited States!  Feed our country first then the world. Teach them how to help them selves no-one helps US!

It's not like every individual household is hoarding rice. The article failed to mention a lot of smaller restaurants buy their bulk goods from these retailers. I'm sure it was the restaurants and not the general public that generated this policy.

Do as I do. Hate everybody and everything.Hate hate hate hate hate hate.

End Times

Pasta, anyone?

I suspect everything is starting to come to a head- gas, food, economy, wars and rumors of wars. When a dynamic leader comes on the world scene that promises to solve all these problems, people WILL love him. He's called the antichrist in the book of Revelation. Store food for your family NOW, there is no better time. Get out of debt, live simply, grow a garden, put in some fruit trees, get some chickens, become a bit of a PRODUCER instead of just a CONSUMER. You'll enjoy the FREEDOM this brings. The "land of plenty" may not always be that way. Hosea 4:6 "My people perish from a lack of knowledge"

I do not like rice anyways.   With elevated sugar, I cut back on my intake of bread based products.  Good time to diet.

Nobody is going to save you. Not the president (who ever that might be). Not the congress... not your state government. Certainly not the corporations that deliver the products you use and consume.

You are responsible for yourself. Work for yourself... set yourself up so you can AT LEAST feed yourself.

This is not a test. No score will be given. Your life depends on how well you can care for yourself and your family - not your paycheck (with ever decreasing worthless dollars) - or your resume. Soon nobody is going to care how well you did on your last job.... LEARN TO FEND FOR YOURSELF - or you just might be one of billions that are going to die in the next 9-13 years.

It is predicted that 3/4 of the human population will die in the next 9-13 years. That is 4 billion people. Will you be one of them? This is natural for biological life - exponential growth is always followed by expontential death. Read a biolology text.

You know... just because it's really bad news doesn't make it not true. I'm glad the media is reporting this. Hold on to your hats, folks, it's going to be a wild ride.

All I can say is it boils down to one word "GREED" that is why we are in the situation that we are in, and it's affecting the whole world now, and it's only going to get worse out there unless we start opening our mouths, and saying something about it.  They are sending 200 million to help feed the needy oh here comes america to save us again even though we hate their guts, so now that will take away from 400,000 children here in the U.S. that need money for school lunches according to MSN, so take away from the american people again, and give to other countries that hate us, and don't know how to stop having children because they can't even feed the ones that they have!  It just doesn't make since to me anymore this whole goverment is screwed completely up!  We keep sending money to help people in other countries  when our own people need help!   Hello is anyone out there.....

This is perfect for us here in the U.S. if you think about it. While we have shipped many of our jobs overseas and people are having a hard time making ends meet in this country, we still are producers of a large portion of the world's food. And most of the time we send it to Africa or Asia for free (or heavily discounted). Why? Oh boo hoo, people are hungry - then grow your own damn rice! I say we continue to horde it and use it as a tool to bolster our own economy. Maybe we can trade it for oil or something. I don't think anyone would mind if the price of gas went down. Or better yet, we can cut production and supply to jack up the price of rice (i.e. OPEC with oil). This could be a great bargaining chip. Future proposals with Iran and North Korea: the rice-for-nukes program. At least if we Americans do experience widespread poverty, we won't go hungry! Somewhere, Uncle Ben is stacking his dollars and chuckling!
