Sam's Club, Costco are rationing rice

Shades of World War II: Two warehouse-type retail chains in the United States are rationing rice as anxious customers stock up because of a worldwide shortage.

It's the most startling sign that the world food crisis is making itself felt in the United States. But, despite rising food prices here, we've still got it good compared with some developing countries, where food shortages and price hikes have sparked deadly riots.

"Based on a very rough analysis, we estimate that a doubling of food prices over the last three years could potentially push 100 million people in low-income countries deeper into poverty," World Bank president Robert B. Zoellick said recently. He has called for a "New Deal for Global Food Policy."

Likely because of customer hoarding, Sam's Club has imposed a limit on bulk purchases of rice. Customers can purchase no more than four 20-pound or larger bags of jasmine, basmati and long-grain white rice per visit. (A similar move is not planned for other Wal-Mart-owned stores.) Some Costco stores have imposed restrictions on bulk sales of rice and flour.

This prompted Baltimore Sun blogger Jay Hancock to write: "Food hoarding in the United States? Rice-purchase controls at Sam's Club? Get ready to unfurl your rationing coupons and plant a Victory Garden. What is the world coming to?"

The price of rice rose 10% last month in the U.S., which exports about half of its rice crop and where the supply is stable. Not so in the rest of the world.

U.N. World Food Program executive director Josette Sheeran said the price of rice has more than doubled in seven weeks. At a London conference on the world food crisis, she warned of a "silent tsunami" that threatens 20 million poor children, according to The Associated Press.

The AP says it's the "first global food crisis since World War II." Why is this happening? Experts blame high fuel costs, an emphasis on biofuels to the detriment of food production, extreme weather, and changing diets in India and China. Some rice-producing countries have also cut back on exports.

According to the AP, "Evolving diets among burgeoning middle classes in India and China will help double the demand for food -- particularly grain-intensive meat and dairy products -- by 2030, the World Bank says."

Biofuel? The overall production cost and energy required to produce the fuel is more than the cost of Petrofuel.  Granted, it is made in America with subsidies, but hey, is it worth it?  Now that corn price had gone up, ... etc.  The best way to curb the energy usage is "supply and demand", so is food -- at some point, there will be more farmers growing food.  Let the free market workout the issues.  Same for oil consumption.

$$YOUR GOVERMENT SUCKS$$ THEY DONT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING OR ANYONE

What ever happened to the kitchen gardens ? You can grow most of your vegtables right in the backyard or in any space where there is sunlight. We are not running out of food we are running out of people to grow it!

How about more information about how to grow your own food.

WOW. why all the anger?dose cutting others down help.i makes me sad.we have a great deal of problems, we are faced with.i think we are all aware of that.we need to stop this greed.what if all your money wont buy food.money is fake.food and shelter is a need.EVERYTHING else is a want.thats greed.i want to leave this planet in the same, or better shape then i entered it.

The rice farmer from Arkansas that posted earlier knows what it is like to try to deal with the current economic situation around the world.  Some of you don't have a clue about the world's food markets and just like to blame Bush for all of the world's problems. Who will you be blaming 3-5 year's from now?

Why all coming togather, fuel shortage, food shortage, job shortage..?. Are we planning to move Mars ?. Signs were their but govt advisors were sleeping ?

Are people not supposed to warn you about this?  It is YOUR job to be responsible with this news.  Decrease your over-indulgent habits and try to help the world out.  Stop over-eating, stop wasting food, stop making unnessary trips in your car, carpool, etc.  They have to report these issues and we need to know.  This is a serious problem in the world.  You can't turn a blind-eye to this; that is another one of America's problems.  Be a responsible person with this information and do your part to help.

I'm sorry, limiting a purchase to 80 lbs of rice at a time is NOT rationing.  1 cup of rice will feed a family of 3-4 for a meal.  How long does it take to go thru 80 lbs?

Go talk to your parents or grandparents who lived thru WWII to understand what true rationing is.

I was at Costco yesterday and people were buying big sacks of rice like crazy.  Sorta like when we ran out and bought duct tape and took our money out of the banks because of the coming of Y2K.  This country has plenty of food available and there aren't going to be any shortages.  Now, if I lived in India, I might be a little worried but we just have to ride this out.  Once we get that maniac out of the White House we might have a chance to get back to normal--whatever that is.

Supply and demand can be a *** or a goddess, but no government can repeal it.
