Sam's Club, Costco are rationing rice

Shades of World War II: Two warehouse-type retail chains in the United States are rationing rice as anxious customers stock up because of a worldwide shortage.

It's the most startling sign that the world food crisis is making itself felt in the United States. But, despite rising food prices here, we've still got it good compared with some developing countries, where food shortages and price hikes have sparked deadly riots.

"Based on a very rough analysis, we estimate that a doubling of food prices over the last three years could potentially push 100 million people in low-income countries deeper into poverty," World Bank president Robert B. Zoellick said recently. He has called for a "New Deal for Global Food Policy."

Likely because of customer hoarding, Sam's Club has imposed a limit on bulk purchases of rice. Customers can purchase no more than four 20-pound or larger bags of jasmine, basmati and long-grain white rice per visit. (A similar move is not planned for other Wal-Mart-owned stores.) Some Costco stores have imposed restrictions on bulk sales of rice and flour.

This prompted Baltimore Sun blogger Jay Hancock to write: "Food hoarding in the United States? Rice-purchase controls at Sam's Club? Get ready to unfurl your rationing coupons and plant a Victory Garden. What is the world coming to?"

The price of rice rose 10% last month in the U.S., which exports about half of its rice crop and where the supply is stable. Not so in the rest of the world.

U.N. World Food Program executive director Josette Sheeran said the price of rice has more than doubled in seven weeks. At a London conference on the world food crisis, she warned of a "silent tsunami" that threatens 20 million poor children, according to The Associated Press.

The AP says it's the "first global food crisis since World War II." Why is this happening? Experts blame high fuel costs, an emphasis on biofuels to the detriment of food production, extreme weather, and changing diets in India and China. Some rice-producing countries have also cut back on exports.

According to the AP, "Evolving diets among burgeoning middle classes in India and China will help double the demand for food -- particularly grain-intensive meat and dairy products -- by 2030, the World Bank says."

You people are insane; you really think global warming is a scam??  Do more research instead of remaining in denial!  We are all in a world of trouble and instead of fighting each other, we need to be sticking together!!  Carpool, STOP SPENDING MONEY, WALK OR RIDE YOUR BIKE WHEN YOU CAN!!  STOP BUYING GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!  EVERYONE SAYS THAT THEY WILL TAKE ONE DAY AND NOT DRIVE, BUT NO ONE DOES IT!  WE NEED TO HOLD THE "EXCUSE FOR A PRESIDENT" RESPONSIBILE FOR THE ACTIONS HE IS NOT TAKING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank to the stupid Democrats and Al Gore and the socialist greens we are in a fuel and food crisis. We could have started drilling Anwar and off the coast long ago. Socialist Monkey's.

everything is blamed on the "fule shortage" but here is something to chew on, while we are payin the price at the pumps, company's like exxon are cutting back production of oil, yes the price of everything is gettin to where that average blue coller worker is now being concidered upper low class, for people like my family it is getting increasing harder to afford the simple things, between gas going up, rent gose up, food is goning up... and the Media is not helping, neither is our current president..

We have to stop being victims of our own bad behavior. Can't figure out what's going on? Read the Limits to growth and start adapting. Talk radio propaganda and our government wiil not save you.

Most of these comments are inane dribble. Mamaoz, what exactly should the President do? It's not his job to or responsibility to lower the price of oil or do anything at all about the mortgage issues. People got themselves into this mess. And as for blaming the media...come on people, we all know how the media is. We all know the media loves gloom and doom and pushes a far left agenda. Be adults and pay attention to what you read. Don't believe everything you read and hear and do a little digging around on your own. How about a little discernment and common sense. The U.S. has lived on credit and borrowed time for a while. It's time to pay the piper. We'll be fine. Quit complaining.

KEEP SPENDING BILLIONS AND BILLIONS ON A "WAR" THAT HAS NO END IN SIGHT WHILE GAS AND FOOD GO THRU THE ROOF......TAKE CARE OF AMERICANS FIRST!!!

I am going to the grocery to buy and hoard rice for my family, and I hope all who knows Costco and Sam's club is rationing rice will also try to buy all off the shelf.  Freedom of press and speech is killing us.  News reporters should be fined for sending consumers in limbo. R&R

the goverment bitches about the economy,  but here is a thought why don't you control gas prices.  we all know you can and maybe people can afford to go do things and oh guess what spend money to help the economy.  the reason for the housing problems is you let lenders do dumb ass loans.  myself was told that i was to young for a 30 year fixed,  but didn't bite and got my 30 year fixed.  although i had several lenders that wouldn't even talk to us unless we did an interest only loan.  shame on the government for allowing *** like this to go on.  why don't you try taking care of america for a change and when will we get a leader that actually cares about the little people.  also instead of campagns costing millions don't you think there is a better use for that money.  so government pull your head out of your ass and get a clue.

As an old Chinese proverb says: "When the price of rice is higher than a man can pay, heaven ordains a new leader."

Yes, the media does have a responsiblity to report the news and it seems that everything does get blown out of proportion "just a bit". Remember Y2K? People were taking their money out of the bank and buying powdered milk. There are so many greedy people out there, and others that just get a kick out of scaring everyone else. It seems like we are always our own worst enemy at many different levels. Maybe it is truly time for the government to stop wasting so much of our tax dollars. I enjoy the flowers that are planted on every street corner in my city, but if it means that other people are doing without, I can certainly do without looking at all the planted flowers that we all paid for.
