24 signs that you're a mega-consumer

Do you automatically think that "budget" is the name of a rental-car company? Chances are you have a problem with spending.

A post by Ron at The Wisdom Journal identifies 24 signs to look for to determine if you're a mega-consumer. He said he was inspired to write the post after his kids noticed that someone they know has four yard sales a year and asked, "How much stuff do they have?"

Another sign: "You cannot fit anything else in your garage -- and you don't even have your car in there."

Ron isn't writing about people who have so much money that they never have to worry about how much they spend. He's speaking to those who spend and don't know where that money is coming from.

These are folks who "go to those free time-share weekends and fall for the spiel," have tons of clothes but never have anything to wear, and have already spent their tax rebate check even though it hasn't arrived.

Other signs: "You have HSN and QVC on speed-dial." "You evaluate every purchase in light of its monthly payment, or what your limit is on Visa, or which credit card you're not late on." "Your motto is, I came, I saw, I wanted, I bought."

Sorry article presented in a poor fashion.

Spend what you can afford.  Nothing wrong with that.  I like my junk in the garage. I buy clothes at good will.  But I buy fishing tackle at the highest priced local fly shop I can find.  And lots of it.

Raised 3 kids on 15000 a year.  I know how to cut spending.  But not now that they are on their own.

this is why blogs are useless. a tease to a link that doesn't work.

When your house is the upper story of your garage. Bonus points for owning a home on top of a garage, with an attached garage.

Could we please just read the article?  Isn't that what the teaser on the MSN page implied?

Totally disgusted with this type of internet garbage to sort through.

this is stupid...

and your mother dresses you funny..

Hyper consumerism is very old news people. As a couple we live on less than $30,000 a year - no car payments, credit card payments, etc. - people think we have money because we take a vacation every year and own a hardware store! Ha! If you don't spend it, it's still in your pocket.

I FOUND IT!!  For those still searching (or getting error messages)---click on Karen's name above the article, then choose the title of Ron's article (which is the second one down in her list), then right click on "24 signs to look for" and tell it to open in a new window.  That's what worked for me...finally!

As a nation we have wastefully consumed most of our natural resources, outsourced most manufacturing, outsourced much of our speculation, and now have outsourced most of our debt.  Instead of the awesome productive World Power with over 50% of World GNP after WW11, we have become a nation of speculators and consumers.  There are changes coming as we shift gears downward from the #1 power and spenders so hang on to your hat and keep the gun loaded.
