Once-dominant Kmart isn't what it used to be

"FMF" at Free Money Finance worked one summer years ago as a management intern at Kmart, so he has an insider's perspective on the chain's decline. In his new series of store reviews, he gives his former employer an F.

When he worked there, "Kmart was the king of mass merchants, but my particular store was panicked because a new competitor was headed into their region, some company by the name of Wal-Mart," he says. "... they were bracing for an invasion that they expected to be about as terrible as the Huns coming to ransack their city."

The ransacking apparently has taken its toll. By the way, FMF gave Wal-Mart a B+ rating.

Now, he says, Kmart is "a low-end Wal-Mart." (Ouch!) Sometimes Kmart advertises a really good deal, he says. Another bonus is that his local Kmart is near a Taco Bell. Overall, he says, "Stores are crummy and in poor locations, prices are only OK, employees are rude, merchandise is weak."

Many who posted comments agreed with FMF, although some readers said they like Martha Stewart brand items and the gardening supplies. Reader Kristi wrote: "The thing that always boggles my mind is why on earth Martha Stewart would want her name at all associated with a store like Kmart." Reader Bobby replied, "Or why Kmart would want their name associated with her."

Kmart also takes it on the chin at Rate It All. "Excelsior30" pretty much summed up many reviewers' remarks with "I will consider the store as a last resort to looking for a thing that I can't find anywhere else."

Sonya at No More Mumus gave Kmart a somewhat good grade for plus-size clothes last May. "Well, Kmart was a teeny bit better than Target, but not by much. At least they had some clothes in their plus-sized section," she wrote. In another post, she complimented Kmart's selection of swimwear.

I live near both a K-Mart and Wal-mart and I choose K-Mart.  People act so dumb becasue they are drivng to Wal-Mart.  I don't under stand why people will drive 25 extra miles, past K-Mart, Krogers and other stores to save a few dollars.  That is so stupid.  The cost of gasoline and the wear and tear on your vehicle to say taht they have been to Wal-Mart.  Also look at the other businesses that Wal-Mart has hurt or closed!  And Wal-Mart dosen't offer quality Meats and Produce.

Neither K-Mart nor Wal-Mart are pleasent shopping experiences by any stretch of the imagination. The "help", the somewhat cheesy merchandise, even the customers, all equal a brutal stint of  shopping. Walmart has more to offer in the way of merchandise, and I sometimes shop Walmart.com... but never Kmart online. Walmarts prices are deffinatlely cheaper, so I "bite the bullet" and shop there usually two times a month. I consider it a nessesary evil.

I HAVE A 4YR OLD GRANDSON-WHO HAD RECEIVED 2 OF THE SAME TOYS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY AS GIFTS.HE HAD WANTED A DIFFERANT TOY, SO MY DAUGHTER AND I TOOK HIM TO K-MART TO EXCHANGE FOR THE TOY HE WANTED. WE WERE TOLD

(NO EXCHANGE) WITHOUT RECEIPT. WE WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT THE TOY HE WANTED,ONLY BECAUSE KMART WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO CARRIED IT.

AS I WAS LEAVING I SAW A CUST NUMBER AT THE EXCHANGE DESK,I CALLED AND TOLD MY STORY AFTER A FEW MIN. I WAS TOLD GO BACK INTO THE STORE AND GET A REFUND ..I DID BUT I WONT GO BACK AFTER THE RUDENESS I RECIEVED FROM THE PEOPLE AT THAT STORE

As a child (with paper route earnings to spend) I would often look through the sunday circulars comparing prices on what ever was my latest fancy.  A fishing rod, ice skates, a new bicycle,  K-Mart would have an advertisement that would beat all competitors.  But when you arrived at the store that item would be sold out or sometimes never was stocked at that store.  Usually when you arrived in the area of the store where the item should be stocked there were several other shoppers also unhapply looking for the same merchandise.  I leaned after several disapointments to shop elseware.

the problem with Kamrt, is that they didn't ever build new stores, just kept their old ones, and  and kept the status quo. Now they have old stores in not so great shopping areas and Centers, and its easier to shop at Target and Walmart that is near the places you are shopping at . I have all 3 stores within 2 miles of my house,

but Kmart is a old 40 year old store, in a dumpy Center that is hard to get out of.

Guess where I don't shop!

KMART or WALMART-I think KMART offers a better deal.  Maybe not all of them are in the greatest of locations or have great customer service, however, the ones I go to are just fine.  When I need service I can always find an associate or a manager, and whatever issue I have is resolved.  Also the quality of clothes and household items are great, and they still have layaway - sure they always ask if you want to get a Sears credit card, but I have an option, whereas WALMART decided to stop having layaway, only credit or cash or as they said "gift cards are being used or no-interest credit cards" - I sure want to know where the "no interest credit cards are because that is not a lasting benefit (that is just something to get you to start - it does not last), and as for gift cards I don't know anybody that gets gift cards with enough value to purchase a whole season of clothes for a child or to refurbish a bedroom and bathroom - LAYAWAY.  I seldom shop in stores that don't offer that option.  I keep my credit cards for things like auto repairs, emergency home repairs, use while traveling, etc.

As one other reader wrote they have really nice plus size clothes - but then to they have great children's clothes too.  We need stores like KMART, the major department stores leave a lot to be desired when shopping - everything all over the place - one can't really find what you want easily - at KMART, if they have it you only need to look in one area not all over the store.  Plus I have a handicap and walking is difficult so I like having a shopping cart to hold on to and to put my merchandise into to hold - and I don't have to drag it around all over the store on my arm.  People always want bigger and more, but they might need to stop and reflect - maybe bigger and more is what is costing so much more.  I hope KMART stays around for a long time.  I enjoy shopping there.

we stopped shopping at K-mart about 15 years ago for one reason, RUDE employees.

At every K-mart i`ve ever been to the universal theme has been the same, RUDE employees.

15 years ago I decided to spend my money at stores where as a customer I am treated with respect and so I stopped shopping at K-Mart.

I have worked for Kmart for over 6 months. For 20 years I always liked shopping there for prices and quality of merchandise (Jaclyn Smith, Martha Stewart even though their pricing is pretty high). When I became an employee they just blew my mind!!

They are terrible employers. They have no sense of dignity, are uncooperative and just plain not right (as in the head). They have violated several proven business pratices and act like their children! Their employees are rude, have a I dont care attitude and are lazy and childish with their gossip and condescending attitudes.

I will be looking for another job soon. I just cant take their BS anymore. I dont know if I will continue to shop there or not.

Shop our local Wal-mart most of the time, but if I want to get in and out fast I go to our local K-mart, They are never as busy as Wal-Mart and both are close by. I have noticed that since Sears took over k-mart they have not stocked their auto dept. as well as when Wal-Mart  was sole owner. Also it is hard to get help in any Dept.Store anymore. That in cludes Home Depot & Lowes. Seems like when I do need to ask an employee at any stor for help they all have disipeard or turn and go in the other direction, almost like they know you need help finding somthing. What makes me mad is the TV comercials for any Store dont live up to real life.

I will go out of my way, if necessary, to shop at a KMart store versus a Walmart store.  Walmart stores seem like huge, dimly lit barns to me, with employees, when you can find them, either uncaring or totally clueless.  I worked at KMart for three years, started as a cashier and ended as a service desk manager, and the whole experience for me was great.  Store policy as far as refunds, exchanges, etc. are firmly set, but stores are understaffed and staff is inadequately trained, it's part of the nature of the beast, with high employee turnover, the pay is not great, unless you're a high school kid who still lives at home.  At the KMart where I worked, (and shopped at for 30 years until I moved away), when the store operated in the black for the previous week, hours could be added but if they operated in the red for the previous week, hours were cut.  Right after I left, several long term, full time employees, who had benefits and retirement plans, were let go and replaced by part time people who were much younger.  Bu the operation of each and every store depends on the management, from the district manager to the service desk employees, and when they are not up to par, the store is going to suffer.  Also, it is unbelievable how rude people can be to the poor little cashiers, who have absolutely no say in company policy whatsoever, when an item rings up wrong, or a previous customer has hung an article of clothing on a sales rack when the article is not on sale, etc.  Go to the management, don't waste your time harrassing the cashier!  Also, I have to clue you in, general public, ya'll are alot more unpleasant when you're shopping than you like to think you are, letting your children urinate in dressing rooms, opening makeup, trying to return cds or games you don't like......you can't take them back and exchange them for another one!  Anyway, I digress, KMart DOES need better management and a better marketing strategy, they have good quality products (although I personally think the Martha Sterwart and Jacqueline Smith lines are too expensive for many areas) but all in all, between KMart, Walmart and Target, KMart will get my shopping dollars every time.  And to my favorite little Big K on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem, NC, I want to say a big hello! to Rick, Trudy, Donald, and Marcia, what I learned from working with you was a level of professionalism I have seldom seen anywhere else.
