Wal-Mart vs. Target: Which is better?

How does positive-thinking blogger Steve Olson really feel about Wal-Mart? A positive-thinking tip in one of the most popular posts at his site is "Visit Target frequently and stay out of Wal-Mart."

He's not the only blogger to share his opinion on the big-box titans. Several lately have posted comparisons of the two stores.

Steve, of Steve-Olson.com, back in 2006 listed 10 reasons why he prefers Target, including "I've never seen anyone wearing a NASCAR shirt, purple sweat pants, and pink fluffy slippers at Target." Also, the aisles at Wal-Mart are too narrow, the employees are surly and not helpful, and the customers look depressed. (Read his anecdote about shopping for a lunch box at both stores.)

He added: "Wal-Mart's atmosphere is cheap and crass. Target's atmosphere exudes progress and style."

More-recent posts by other bloggers indicate the same dissatisfaction. CyberCJH's Blog relates a happy shopping trip to Tar-zhay -- and an awful one at Wally World. "Walk into the store. Walk back out of the store to get a shopping cart. You'll only find them scattered about in the parking lot. ... Throw away the rotten banana peel and/or McDonald's garbage left in the cart." Later, "Even though there are 30 cash registers, there will only be two open." Wait, while your Lean Cuisine starts to defrost.

Advanced Personal Finance calls Target the "anti-Wal-Mart" and hates Wal-Mart. "I don't know what I hate most -- the customers, the employees, the filthy stores, or the parking lot." One of his readers countered, "It's Target snobs that are willing to pay for the atmosphere (walking around flaunting themselves to all the other snobby Target shoppers) that keep that store in business."

So why do so many people shop at Wally World? Reuters reports the results of a Citigroup Global Markets survey of the latest shopping trends. "An overwhelming 72% of customers surveyed said that Wal-Mart had the lowest prices," the Citi report said. Citi also found that Target's prices are, on average, within 3% of Wal-Mart's.

Is Target really better than Wal-Mart? Not in many important areas, writes Carrie Kirby at our partner blog Wise Bread. She writes that both have successfully opposed unionization, neither pays a livable wage, and both sell products made in factories "with poor human rights records."

Want to shop at a big-box store that takes better care of its employees? It's Costco, she says.

i will rather shop at target....then shop at walmart point blank....

- target is NOT owned by a company in france.  wise up, people!  its just an urban myth!  target's headquarters are actually located in minnesota.

- target doesn't allow the salvation army guys at that special time of the year - because it is considered solicitation.  target doesn't allow ANY solicitation - not just the salvation army.  target believes in a clean, hassle-free, streamlined shopping experience for their guests - and having someone ask for money (anybody!) hinders that experience.

- target has a 1+1 policy for their registers at checkout.  as in, if there is one person being checked out, there should only be one person in line behind them; and if there is more people in line, another register should be opened.  every target employee is trained to run a register.  if your target does NOT meet these standards, you should ask to speak to management.  specifically, the GSTL (guest service team leader) or the ETL-GS (executive team leader of guest services).

- prices.  it is a very common misconception that target is more expensive than walmart - however, target just holds itself to a higher standard than walmart.  when you walk into a store, it should be EXPECTED that everything is in stock, easy to find, clean, and the prices are reasonable.  some commenters seem to have noticed this difference between target and walmart already - but others who find target to be "snobby" - think again.  that's just the perception you put on yourself.

when choosing between the two, i definitely always go with target.  wal-mart just makes me feel crappy.  i have been in a few times, and have always left feeling as if i need to soak in clorox to get the filth off of me.  the filth of the sticky shopping cart, the rude employees, and gross people with constant morning breath and holes in their clothes.  its just icky!

target is clean, organized, and always has what i want in an unopened, undamaged package.  it may be a few more dollars, but i leave satisfied everytime.

sometimes regardless of what the appearance is of the store, the low prices will call to your name...especially folks who live paycheck to paycheck...

I will NOT shop at Wal-Mart. It's not because of the "rude employees, slobbish people, narrow isles, dirty bathrooms, etc." I do not shop there because they are slowly destroying America. They ship everything overseas and have them make it cheaper.

They approached Coca-Cola and asked them if they would change their formula so that they can sell it cheaper. HELLO!! Of course they said no. Just like Apple/Macs. They refuse to make their products with crappy parts so it will be cheaper. I mean how do you think their prices are so cheap where other stores are not? They have chinese people working their butts off for 5 cents an item, and taking jobs away from America. Also, when they open up new stores they end up putting many of the mom and pop stores out of business. Now many of you probably do not care.

I shop at Target, I am not saying they do not ship anything overseas but the quality is much better. Yes they are more "hip" but beyond that they have more selection.

You Get What You Pay For!!

Walmart has horrible and deceptive online pratices and a lousy computer purchasing system.  On November 13, 2008, I placed an order online to purchase a Nintendo Wii bundle that had everything I desired for the price of $499 (Customer Choice Bundle).   After the order was placed, it was cancelled without ANY notification that there was any problem.  I did NOT receive any notification when placing the order that something did not match and I did NOT receive an email later saying there was a problem.  Over a week later when I went to view the shipping arrival dates, since there had been ZERO communication, I discover it was cancelled the same day of placement.  Again, I had NO notice.  That was order no. 2677399505216.

I tried to purchase the system again, but that bundle was NO longer available.  I found one that was NOT as good and tried again.  Since the Discover order had been cancelled, I used my Visa card.  That was Order no. 2677404223127 on November 25, 2008, the date I discovered through my own means since there was NO notification, that the original order was cancelled.  Guess what happened - it was cancelled but again secretly.  I get no warning when placing the order and NO emails letting me know.  I go back and look - cancelled.  So I talk with a warm body on line and try again, Order no. 2677404262725.  You can guess -- the same thing happened.  It tells us both that the order is processing then over 30 minutes later cancels it.  OF COURSE DURING THE SEVERAL CALLS, I AM REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT IF I USE A WALMART CREDIT CARD - WOO HOO AND MAGICALLY IT WILL WORK.  I  refused to do that!

I in the mean time had verified ALL credit info in your system AND tried a VISA card thinking maybe Discover had a problem.  I also called Discover who acknowledged that there was a pending authorization and that all was GOOD on their end.  They verified that I had plenty of credit available and that there was NO problem on their end.

To mitigate the damages  created, I also went  to Amazon and placed an order using that same Discover and you know what happened?  Amazon AND the third party vendor selling part of the package had NO problem.  I have part of the order already sitting in my office.

So what is the problem?

1.  Failure of Wal-Mart to notify of cancellation to allow customer to find alternate product.

2.  Suggestion MORE than once by customer service personnel that the transaction WOULD work if I just used a Wal-Mart card.    Someone, I think that is dishonest

3.  Replacement of the bundle was NOT possible and the bundle purchased cost $300 more in order to come close to the bundle first offered at Wal-Mart.

4.  Failure to provide customer with THEIR own credit information - I get answers that "some part of your credit information did not pass our system" but "we cannot tell you what or why."  So you deny my card, suggest I use YOUR card and then keep secret the reason why???????????????????????

Target and Wal-Mart-Kmart and other big box monsters are all the same. The only difference is that compared to WM all the others are dwarfs. Target does not know what providing customer service...you never find employees on the salesfloor to assist customers, and when they are available they are ignorant but the products in their store...(just like WM)..and friendly...I don't think that is part of their vocabulary Target is just bright colors with no finesse. They more than WM have high prices for cheap merchandise made somewhere overseas. The stores are cleaner because fewer people shop there...not because they have higher standards, but because they have always employed few people, and prices..I have made price comparisons, you can save more by shopping anywhere else.  People need to get realistic about these big box monsters...they provide us with cheap merchandise, at not always cheap prices, abuse labor, keep their wages low, and benefits at minimum..so we can have merchandise at cheap prices. Some customers prefer Target, some prefer WM and so forth, but really... it is all the same game. I guess some customers believe they are doing more for the poor worker by shopping at Target.

I read the comment Lindsey wrote it was funny and dum at the same time. Its is true that usually walmart shoppers are low income badly dressed people with no education. But no all of them are like that, i shop there because of the prices i dont buy all my groceries there i go to Sams Club too and target. Target are getting better at their prices and the customer service is really good there is always someone there to help you when you need it. I dont really care about the decore of the store i just want clean fresh products and i love to SAVE MONEY! but one thing i do noticed about target shoppers is that like "Lindsey" they are snobbs or wanna be rich snobbs who cant afford to shop at the upscale expensive groceries stores I JUST CANT STAND THEM!! AND PLEASE DONT CALL TARGET "Tar-zhay" THE SNOBBS ARE TRYING TO MAKE THE STORE SOUND SNOBBISH BECAUSE THEY ARE REALLY ASHAMED TO BE SHOPPING AT A DISCOUNT GROCERIE STORE!!! the store is just a more pricer version of wal-mart. Wal-marts customer service is CRAP the sales people are mostly GHETTO i just cant stand it. But i'm no snobb i shop at both stores because its the only way i'll save money :D

As a former young Target shopper (as a kid) in Eden Prairie, MN. I'd have to say that Minnesota did not acquire a Wal-Mart until the '90's though, after shopping at target, working at wal-mart, and knowing it's not necessarily which store you shop (Target or Wal-Mart), but it's location. I know this because I have worked at two Wal-Mart stores- One in Buffalo, MN before it was a supercenter, and the new supercenter in Monticello, MN both with no problems, and yes, some Wal-Mart's have bad managers, associates, and customers, though I found that more in "the cities" (Twin Cities metro area), more often than out here in rural-suburban central Minnesota, and I have a target 1 mile away from my house. I dont shop there, the selection is extremely limited (regular target with "some"groceries), prices are slightly higher, and I grew up shopping at target, but you need to take into account where you are and who the store caters to, it's "targeted audience", target will attract more upper-middle class people, wal-mart, not as "exclusive", they'll take anybody. I've tried to apply at target, and other than my employment at Wal-Mart, which maybe they can't hire me as a "conflict of interest" despite the fact it was many years ago that I worked for wallyworld, I think it's also a "status issue" i.e. "we're too good to hire a former wallyworld associate".

Just try to keep in mind they are both okay companies to work for, target is no better, they just have a different audience to cater to, whereas walmart is looked upon lower because they have more of a rural (redneck, is what you're all thinking) influence and don't market to the "sophisticated" urban and suburban crowd. Keep in mind, I am originally from "the cities", and have lived the difference, but just be glad they're both still American based retailers, and not bought out and moved overseas.

yeah okay i am like 11mos late on this topic... but working forTarget and knowing alot about wal-hottmess-mart it all comes down to the politics of the both. i see alot i like about target and alot i down right hate about that rolling back price catastropy... all of u hit on some good points but alot of it is totally re-stated in a more loving or hateful way. there is books on both stores opinion after opinion any where u look. do some research on the both of them. u will find things that u totally didnt know and probaly wish u hadnt. i dont want to burn the brige that puts the food on my table or helps write the check on my mortgage but i encourage u to do some research...
