Wal-Mart vs. Target: Which is better?

How does positive-thinking blogger Steve Olson really feel about Wal-Mart? A positive-thinking tip in one of the most popular posts at his site is "Visit Target frequently and stay out of Wal-Mart."

He's not the only blogger to share his opinion on the big-box titans. Several lately have posted comparisons of the two stores.

Steve, of Steve-Olson.com, back in 2006 listed 10 reasons why he prefers Target, including "I've never seen anyone wearing a NASCAR shirt, purple sweat pants, and pink fluffy slippers at Target." Also, the aisles at Wal-Mart are too narrow, the employees are surly and not helpful, and the customers look depressed. (Read his anecdote about shopping for a lunch box at both stores.)

He added: "Wal-Mart's atmosphere is cheap and crass. Target's atmosphere exudes progress and style."

More-recent posts by other bloggers indicate the same dissatisfaction. CyberCJH's Blog relates a happy shopping trip to Tar-zhay -- and an awful one at Wally World. "Walk into the store. Walk back out of the store to get a shopping cart. You'll only find them scattered about in the parking lot. ... Throw away the rotten banana peel and/or McDonald's garbage left in the cart." Later, "Even though there are 30 cash registers, there will only be two open." Wait, while your Lean Cuisine starts to defrost.

Advanced Personal Finance calls Target the "anti-Wal-Mart" and hates Wal-Mart. "I don't know what I hate most -- the customers, the employees, the filthy stores, or the parking lot." One of his readers countered, "It's Target snobs that are willing to pay for the atmosphere (walking around flaunting themselves to all the other snobby Target shoppers) that keep that store in business."

So why do so many people shop at Wally World? Reuters reports the results of a Citigroup Global Markets survey of the latest shopping trends. "An overwhelming 72% of customers surveyed said that Wal-Mart had the lowest prices," the Citi report said. Citi also found that Target's prices are, on average, within 3% of Wal-Mart's.

Is Target really better than Wal-Mart? Not in many important areas, writes Carrie Kirby at our partner blog Wise Bread. She writes that both have successfully opposed unionization, neither pays a livable wage, and both sell products made in factories "with poor human rights records."

Want to shop at a big-box store that takes better care of its employees? It's Costco, she says.

This is another sour grapes site that is comparing apples to oranges. Wal-Mart is tailored to the everyday basics shopper. They are shopped harder and  a little rougher around the edges than a typical target store. Their is no comparison in prices here or with anyother chain, day in day out Wal- Mart's prices are cheaper on almost everything they carry. You folks need to stop worrying about people that shop in house slippers and hair curlers and work on improving your own character.

I shop at Walmart a whole lot more than Target just because the nearest Walmart is 2 miles away, and the nearest Target is about 19 miles away. I agree that I've never seen anyone in Target wearing a NASCAR shirt, purple sweat pants, and pink fluffy slippers, but I have a major beef with Target.

The two stores I shop at (when I get there) are very attractive with nice wide aisles, HOWEVER, Target is way too perfect. Each aisle is clearly defined by products. The displays are neat and attractive. They have good quality products, the very things I would buy and bring home. Except clothes. I hate their women's clothing. Purses  and accessories okay, clothing not, don't like their shoes.

But Target's aisles and displays look so perfect because if something doesn't fit perfectly into the display with balance and style, they don't carry it. I can't tell you how many times I've walked out of Target with nothing because they don't have it, didn't fit the perfection of the store. Target's perfection just plain annoys me, sorry.

I've gotten used to Walmart's more cluttered, comfortable style. I wouldn't be caught dead in  a NASCAR shirt, purple sweat pants, and pink fluffy slippers, not even in the privacy of my own home (shudder), but it's easy to run over to Walmart and pick up what I need. No one to impress there, not even my ritziest neighbor, because they dress for success at Walmart, that "I really didn't mean to leave the house dressed like this" look.

The staff at my 2 closest Walmart stores are NOT surely and are very helpful if asked.

I know that Walmart doesn't pay their help a decent livable wage, but no one pays me a decent livable wage either, so I can't afford to shop a lot any place else. This is sad, but I don't think a lot of the people who work at my Walmart store could get jobs anyplace else, in "niceer" stores.

I love our nearby regional chain supermarket, but I can't afford to buy groceries there. I can't afford to pay 79 cents for a carton of yogurt that I can get at Walmart for 50 cents;  my one and only favorite orange juice costs about $3.19 at Walmart, $3.99 at my regional store. Target prices are more comparable to Walmart's but Target is just too far away.

I hadn't thought about it before, but comparing Target and Walmart is kind of like comparing apples with organges. KMart is not in the big leagues with Walmart, but they are a better comparison to Walmart.. come to think of it I think KMart tries to be a little bit of both, some supposedly upscale stuff like Martha Stewart (gag)  is more comparable with Target's supposed upscale stuff, but Kmart's cheap and clutter stuff is more comparable to Walmart.

Do you really want to buy food at a store that has wild birds flying around inside? The local Wal-Mart has exactly that and not just in the summer! In general groceries are about the same at both on name brands , but Target also carries a higher quality alterantive if that's what you want. I don't want to knock people if Wal-Mart is what  they like. I choose to go to Target .

although I agree that Wal-Mart is just horribly filthy and generally the shoppers look like they've been plucked out of the crackhouses that you see in movies, it is cheaper than Target and lets face it, gotta save where I can.  Target is obviously a cleaner store and the shoppers there...well lets just say they don't look like crack addicts, but the service at the Target and the WalMart in my city is the same.  30 registers, and if you are lucky you will see 4 registers actually open, not to mention that the employees are pissy in both stores.  Here's a tip, if you don't like your job, get a better one.

I agree and would much rather shop a t Target, although the nearest Target is over an hour away. I live in a small town and all we have is Walmart  -  our store is often dirty, the aisles are too small, and I can never find anything in there. They are constantly moving stuff around and it is very annoying. The help in our store is often dirty looking....soap is cheap people, a little shower before work could do wonders. There is a lady who works mostly the customer service desk that actually reeks of smell every time I am there, and apparently management doesnt have an issue with that.  Target is a CLASSY store and I love to go there whenever I get the chance ! they need to bring a TARGET to our town !  ( althought i have heard rumors that walmart wouldnt allow them to come in.... ????    I dont know how true that is ??)  anyway.......  GO TARGET !

It really depends on what it is I'm looking to purchase. If Walmart has a better price, I'll go there and suffer the consequences of the negatives listed above. I used to live in Kirkwood, a suburb of St. Louis county. The Target and Walmart stores were almost right next to each other, but the shopping experiences were like night and day. 100% of the time, Walmart had the messiest parking lots and the customers were always lower class or very poor looking individuals with no sense of style or class. Just walk a few yards to Target and it was completely different. Kind of amusing if you ask me.

walmart no way they treat employes bad, have inferior products and there store and parking lots are like a dump. The people make you feel like you just went to slumsville. We had a Target close and they closed and moved next to walmart and Sams so thats the end of Target. Now we have a new costco opening up close and I cant wait. I have been told they are up scale from walmart and Targe so yes yes yes.

I live in small town Arkansas where "if it ain't at WalMart-you don't need it". In our town WalMart has driven out any local store for creativity-ie fabric or craft stores-but you can bet your bottom dolar we have sporting goods store for the men up the whazoo and believe it or not for a popluation of just over 11,000 30 banks at last count-Am I missing something??????

i also hate!!! wal-mart and i work in a drug store wher we have to match ther $ 4.00 plan . i'm sick of hearing match the 4.00 plan i want to scream at them if they want that price then drive 30 miles and you can get it . with out putting all of your home town stores out of busniess!!!
