Wal-Mart vs. Target: Which is better?

How does positive-thinking blogger Steve Olson really feel about Wal-Mart? A positive-thinking tip in one of the most popular posts at his site is "Visit Target frequently and stay out of Wal-Mart."

He's not the only blogger to share his opinion on the big-box titans. Several lately have posted comparisons of the two stores.

Steve, of Steve-Olson.com, back in 2006 listed 10 reasons why he prefers Target, including "I've never seen anyone wearing a NASCAR shirt, purple sweat pants, and pink fluffy slippers at Target." Also, the aisles at Wal-Mart are too narrow, the employees are surly and not helpful, and the customers look depressed. (Read his anecdote about shopping for a lunch box at both stores.)

He added: "Wal-Mart's atmosphere is cheap and crass. Target's atmosphere exudes progress and style."

More-recent posts by other bloggers indicate the same dissatisfaction. CyberCJH's Blog relates a happy shopping trip to Tar-zhay -- and an awful one at Wally World. "Walk into the store. Walk back out of the store to get a shopping cart. You'll only find them scattered about in the parking lot. ... Throw away the rotten banana peel and/or McDonald's garbage left in the cart." Later, "Even though there are 30 cash registers, there will only be two open." Wait, while your Lean Cuisine starts to defrost.

Advanced Personal Finance calls Target the "anti-Wal-Mart" and hates Wal-Mart. "I don't know what I hate most -- the customers, the employees, the filthy stores, or the parking lot." One of his readers countered, "It's Target snobs that are willing to pay for the atmosphere (walking around flaunting themselves to all the other snobby Target shoppers) that keep that store in business."

So why do so many people shop at Wally World? Reuters reports the results of a Citigroup Global Markets survey of the latest shopping trends. "An overwhelming 72% of customers surveyed said that Wal-Mart had the lowest prices," the Citi report said. Citi also found that Target's prices are, on average, within 3% of Wal-Mart's.

Is Target really better than Wal-Mart? Not in many important areas, writes Carrie Kirby at our partner blog Wise Bread. She writes that both have successfully opposed unionization, neither pays a livable wage, and both sell products made in factories "with poor human rights records."

Want to shop at a big-box store that takes better care of its employees? It's Costco, she says.

I live in Franklin, NC.  There is no Target here.  I'd have to drive 2 hours to find one.  Our Walmart is in the process of being remodeled.  It looks very nice, very upstyle. And I would'nt think of going there in sweats or rollers in my hair.

I've been to Target when we go to visit our son.  The prices were somewhat  higher than our Walmart, yes the store was neat but is was brand new.  All parking lots get a mess after a while.  I do wish every store would keep their parking lots cleaner.

We have lived all over ,Tn, Fl, Az Ca and now OK. The Wal Mart stores are a bit strange and depressing but in some areas, they are the only game in town. The person who talked about Publix had it right. They are the best by far and so very clean. Costco is also a great place to shop but probably better for large familes . We find Target is good but limited in the food department ofcourse. You can tell so much about a town and its people just by going to the grocery store. The people who are as big as tanks-- Look at what they have in the shopping cart... sweets, white bread, lots of soda. Some people are just at home in Wal-Mart !!

Look, it's all in what you're looking for.  If you want quality groceries, then I agree with the comments about Publix in the south.  Great product, good prices, enjoyable shopping experience.  The same is true out west where I live now with Albertson's and King Soopers. But if you want household stuff, then you have to go where they have what you want and these stores are very careful not to carry the same name brands if they can help it so you won't make too many comparisons.  In today's economy you almost have to go for pricing.  If you feel yucky during your shopping experience but go home saving money you almost have no choice.  And usually, that means WalMart.

I hate both Wal-Mart and Target.  Refuse to shop at either.  If you spend your hard earned money in Wal-Mart, all it does is help the economy in China, not to mention that it was just published that Wal-Mart is now going to cater to the muslim crowd.  What happened to Sam Waltons slogan "Made in the USA"?  If you spend your money at Target, it helps the economy of France, since it is owned by a large corporation there.  Also, Target no longer allows any of the charities to collect in front of their stores.....i.e. The Salvation Army.  They have rang their bells for a hundred years.  Why all of a sudden won't they allow the bell ringers there anymore??   And yes, the employees in both places are extremely rude, sloppy dressed, and have that "I really don't care attitude.  But then again, if I worked for a company that treated me badly as these 2 companies treat their employees, maybe I might be cranky too!!  Publix is my choice for food, and Sears/JC Penney is my choice for other shopping.  I pick and choose as much as I can of the items Made in America (or anywhere else) except China!!!   And those 2 stores are always neat and clean!!!!  This Country is slowly going to &^%$ in a hand cart......I really feel sorry for my grandchildrens generation!!

I shopped at Walmart for years until I just got sick of the stores. Always dirty, no helpful employees, nothing in the right place, stinky bathrooms, etc.

I now shop at Target and I love the stores. It seems that no matter which Target I go into, the employees are always polite, the bathrooms are ALWAYS clean, the floors are always so shinny, and everything is where it should be, EVEN IN THE TOY SECTION DURING CHRISTMAS TIME !!!!!!

Target has a forever friend.....ME

Walmart is to uneven, it is overstocked with things that a dollar store could sell. And the discount shelves are without discount prices.

The asmosphere is to foggy with rollout prices that do nothing for your pocket.

I would rather go to Targets where the WORD target alerts each one of your senses one at a time.

IT'S WHAT'S IN A NAME!

Yes, shopping at Wal-Mart is a necessary evil & I hate doing it but there is no Target near my apartment. I just read all of the other emails about there Wal-Mart being dirty with lazy workers. I have not seen that when I go shopping. I have seen people walking around wearing clothes that shoud been worn only to bed but I have also seen the same thing in the local grocery store, it all has to do with lazy people who don't care about themselves. I am moving to a bigger city where there is a Target & I will probably start shopping there  & see what it is like. People are just going to have to get use to Wal-Mart being around because they are not going anywhere with the way our economy is that is all the american people can afford these days.

WE SHOP AT ALL THE MOM AND POP STORES IN OUR SMALL TOWN... LONG LIVE MOM&POP!!!

I also dislike Wal Mart. I shop there on occaision, but preferrably through the website. The store has those anti-theft monitors at the door that alarm with every other person that walks through. That annoys me, especially because I am usually the "every other person". Makes me feel like a criminal that is guilty before being charged. I have a daughter-in-law that worked at WalMart in Iowa and she told me about the horrible ways they treat their employees. Pregnant women (she was not) that wok there are treated like a nuisance when needing time off for the doctor, and were not allowed to take a full 6 week maternity leave if they missed time during pregnacy due to sicknedd or doctor visits. Sam Walton is probably rolling over in his grave, seeing how his company is now run.

Walmart is deceiving...There has been a few times that I've purchased items over $30., thinking the price was good, only to go into another store and find the same item for alot less.

Just last week, bought "faux wood blinds/58 in wide" at Wal-mart for 53.00, and then went into Fred Meyer (higher quality store),  and found the same size/faux wood for 32.00...Crazy !! and yeah, I returned the ones to Wal-mart.

I've learned to keep an eye out for prices elsewhere...I think Wal-mart is okay for canned goods & some frozen, but meat & produce, I buy elsewhere, and I definetly shop for things on sale elsewhere first.

I find that Wal-mart turns into a "compulsive" shopping trip. Good for them, bad for me !!
