No exit? Consumer finds way out of Columbia House

Unauthorized charges and negative-option marketing traps continue to plague consumers, judging by the number of complaints received at ConsumerAffairs.com. One company in particular, Columbia House, seems to get under consumers' skin, producing 41 complaints in the last 30 days.

Will, of Locust Grove, Ga., says he has no idea how he became a member of Columbia House, but now says he is receiving a steady stream of DVDs -- and bills.

"I canceled my account, but nothing happens," he told us. "You can't call and talk to anyone. I fear they are going to ruin my good credit for something I never signed up for."

Columbia House is one of the oldest "record of the month" clubs in the U.S., offering its members inexpensive CDs or DVDs in exchange for an ongoing commitment to keep buying its products.

Book and record clubs like Columbia House pioneered "negative-option" marketing, where a lack of response from a consumer is taken as implied consent. But while some negative- option plans are well-run, many others are questionable.

Some consumers, like George of San Diego, are convinced that Columbia House is trying to avoid them when they call to cancel or complain.

"I quit this lousy club approximately six months ago," George said. "Today they charged my credit card $27.84. Trying to contact them has proven fruitless, as they have endless voice mail that won't connect you to a live person."

A consumer named Kent, from Fargo, N.D., found a way to get through the voice-mail maze. By doing a little online research, he learned that Columbia House was purchased in 2005 by BMG Direct.

"If you can't get through to Columbia House, you can get through to the new owners, who need to hear about these complaints" he told ConsumerAffairs.com. "So everyone should call up the 'parent company' and give them a piece of your mind. Unlike the secretive Columbia House, their phone lines are wide open."

BMG Direct, part of Bertelsmann AG, is a privately held company located in New York City.  Its telephone number is (212) 930-4531. BMG Direct is a division of DirectGroup Bertelsmann, which can be found online by clicking here.

But don't commit that to stone. The new CEO of Bertelsmann AG, Europe's largest media company, has made it clear he plans to unload some of the company's less profitable units, including its U.S. book, music and DVD clubs.

I managed to get them to quit automatically sending CDs by writing "Not Accepted" on the box and putting it back in the mail.  After a couple months of that they gave up and now only send a catalog.

Columbia House tried their scam on me, in my case I kept anything they sent me and immediately contacted my Attorney General. Columbia House dropped the $50 some dollar bill and hasn't sent a single thing since.

I've been ordering from Columbia House for probably 20 years. I've never had a problem that they didn't take care of. I sent my forms back on time, so they didn't send me anything I didn't want. I've ordered thousands of VHS and DVDs over the years. I might have had to return 3 or 4 products, either from shipping damaged or I didn't like the movie. I would rather sit in the comfort of my home and order a movie from a catalog than go to a retail store and get no customer service, or see the expression on the manager's face when I try to return one because I didn't like it.             F M Reese, Maryland

I have been a member of BMG and Columbia House for years too.. i haven't had any problems, unless i forgot to tell them no to the Feature of the Month.

its pretty simple, tell themno  in alloted time , to the monthly selection, pay your bills on time, and cancell in writing.. worked for me, should work for you, too. dont expect them to reimburse you for your failure to do what the contractual agreement is..

My husband has been recieving bills from columbia house for about six months now and never even sent for anything.  We have wrote letters and  phoned them to no avail. they ar nothing more than scam artists.

I've had BMG for a few years now, I've never had a problem with them. But Columbia House on the other hand screwed me over about 2 years ago, but have since corrected that issue. I will continue to do business with BMG Music though, I've stocked up on all my music through them!

I was with columbia House I use to deal with R.C.A I had no problems back when in the 70"s! But now Bmg. Tried to keep me and gave me more than one Email address they gave me three ! That is when I quit ! I also know they charged me too much tax! I had to keep sending the C.D.s back before they got the message !

I also haave a complaint about Prevention magazine ! I buy there books and I paid all of them and okayed it online!Still I am getting threatening letters and saying I did not pay when I did ! The check cleared someone cashed the check!!!! So I have refused to do business with them anymore and they are still sending me magazine adds to try and get me to buy more! I also get letters from collection agencies and If you try and call Rodale company they are automated and will not answer specific questions !!!Also they try to get you to pay on installments and I payed it all off so they can"t say I need to pay more when they were paid off! They owe me money I paid part on this one than paid of the whole thing !I would steer clear of this company !!!!!

I just got my mail returned from BMG Direct{supposedly}main Office in NewYork as: "NOT DELIVERABLE AS ADDRESSED UNABLE TO FORWARD", This was the one they listed as 1540 Broadway, New York, NY. 10036. So I had to do about 12 reverse telephone searches on the internet because the number was unlisted, but finally I got lucky and got a "hit" (212) 930-4531 which is listed to Paula Batson who is one of the main figures that managed the BMG takeover of Columbia House. The address I came up with is BMG Direct, 1150 15th St. NW., Washington D.C. 20071 it also came up as the same listing guess were?; (212) 930-4531, 6550 E. 30th St., Indianapolis, IN 46219 the one & same as BMG Columbia House how funny that is
