Here's some water cooler conversation for you: Gasoline is hugely inexpensive if you compare it with the cost of many common household liquids. One blogger did, and found that the cost of 2% milk is $3.99 a gallon, Dawn dish detergent is $11.43, Kikkoman soy sauce is $18.21, and Krazy Glue is an incredible $2,322.29 per gallon.
Of course, this comparison -- provided by Xin Lu of our partner blog Wise Bread (Xin is also The Baglady) -- won't help your pain when you're paying at the pump, but it is entertaining.
Think those drinks you purchase aren't expensive? Consider this: Starbucks frappuccino iced coffee is $20.48 a gallon, Monster energy drink is $12.80, and Snapple peach tea is $7.68. Arizona ice tea is a relative bargain at $3.99. Coca-Cola and Pepsi are $5.33.
Xin based her prices on the per-ounce cost of items at her local Safeway in San Mateo, Calif., so prices could be different in your area. The cheapest gas price she could find near home was $3.53.
Safeway canola oil is $9.84, Safeway peanut oil is $13.89, and Bertolli extra virgin olive oil is a much pricier $77.75 per gallon. Cheap whiskey she uses for cooking and Robert Mondavi chardonnay are both $28.16 per gallon.
Xin notes that gasoline in the U.S. is much cheaper than it is in Europe, and suspects that explains why the Europeans have better public transportation. She said the price comparison also made her realize how expensive packaged drinks are. "I do get most of my drinks free at work, but the most frugal thing to do is to just drink tap and save the money for gas," she writes.
