Frugal (and green) tips for expectant moms

Pregnant ladies, don't rush out and buy a bunch of new stuff for the bundle of joy. "They don't need expensive little outfits -- babies can't read the tag to know whether the outfit came from Gymboree or whether it was purchased at babyGap," writes Tiffany at Nature Moms Blog.

Hand-me-down clothes and other baby items are easier on the budget and the environment, she says. Other ways to save money: Clip coupons and look for coupon codes in new-mother magazine classifieds and at Web sites, make your own cloth diapers, and ***-feed your newborn. If you can't, choose glass or nontoxic plastic bottles.

The Nature Moms Web site emphasizes a natural, sustainable approach to living, so this post focuses on things like how to make talc-free baby powder and get free samples of organic baby formula. Tiffany says, "Reusable bottles that do not require drop-in liners will mean less landfill waste."

When it comes to maternity clothes, borrow from friends or your husband, or shop the thrift stores. She says, "Saving money before baby arrives means more money will be accessible when it really counts."

***-feed?  What?  Could we not just say "breastfeed" and avoid making this look kinda dirty?

Suzanne,

Unfortunately, our bad-language filter won't allow that word to appear, even when we're writing about something as wholesome as ***-feeding. This has also happened when we've written about the cost of individual chicken breasts.

Parents can also pick up free clothes and gear from sites like Freepeats.org and Freecycle.org. Frugal AND good for the environment!

Another way to save money is to do cloth diapering, and wash the diapers at home.  My husband and I spent around $250 total to get very good prefold diapers and covers.  We calculated that we already saved money within the first few months of my son's life, and these diapers will last til he's potty trained, and then can be used for a second child.
