Free Money Finance seemed somewhat bemused by this news report: A Canadian man offered a $15,000 ransom after someone took his dog. The chocolate Labrador named Huckleberry disappeared after a dog walker tied him outside a Toronto bakery for a few minutes.
"Life isn't about money -- it's about the connection you make with other souls. Huckleberry was like my soul mate," his owner, Bert Clark, told the Toronto Star.
Free Money Finance shared this story with readers even though he'd recently taken heat for his "no-comment" post linking to a St. Petersburg Times story about a 10-year-old Florida dog's $4,200 pacemaker. "But I'm a glutton for punishment, so here we go," FMF said.
In his own defense, FMF noted that he's written numerous posts about the positives of pet ownership, including research indicating that having a pet can add years to a person's life. (He also admitted in another post that "I've detailed at length the cost of pets to the point where it's the most hated topic here at Free Money Finance.")
As far as Huckleberry goes, he wrote: "I've never thought about 'ransom payments' as a cost of owning a pet, but I guess I'll need to add that now." He also said the dog's owner started way too high with his ransom offer. "The good news -- the dog was returned. Not sure whether or not the $15k will be paid."
