Get your taxes done for free

This post comes from Abby Freedman, a freelance writer and daughter of Smart Spending blogger Donna Freedman.

As an aspiring accountant, I am just odd enough to find income taxes fascinating.

Still, I understand there are saner individuals out there who prefer to duck and cover until this season is over.

Generally, they cope by forking over $100 to $200 to have simple returns completed -- and not necessarily by a CPA -- at a "tax-in-the-box" establishment.

Or they plunk down (much less) money for tax-preparation software to guide them to their refunds. Better, but still not ideal.

You've already paid taxes -- why pay to file a return?
One of the selling points of these tax-software packages is that they allow you to e-file absolutely free!

Wow, spiffy. Except that you could get that anyway if your adjusted gross income is $54,000 or less. Through the IRS' "Free File" program, taxpayers can pick from among numerous companies that will guide them through free versions of tax-preparation software. Each company has its own income guidelines, but $54k is the maximum allowed.

In addition, the IRS trains community volunteers to provide free tax help. That beats paying $100 or more at tax in the box.

Free? That's a lot closer to ideal.

The government wants to help -- no, really!
Here's the deal: The IRS is much more helpful than people might think.

You may think it's a massive, looming, evil bureaucracy just waiting to glom onto your hard-earned dollars. But the 10 or so times I've called the toll-free number, I always talked to helpful, polite employees.

So don’t assume that the agency is out to get you. Tax-preparation assistance sponsored by the government is in fact designed to help the middle class keep its money.

So why don't you know about this e-filing and tax-prep assistance? I can think of a couple of reasons.

Unlike me, most of you don't routinely cruise the IRS Web site (remember: aspiring accountant = strange), so you wouldn't come across this info.
Additionally, the community-based tax-assistance programs tend to be run by nonprofit community agencies, which leads middle-class taxpayers to assume they make too much money to qualify for such services.

Think back to what your high school teachers told you about assuming. Depending on the program, you can earn up to $40,000 as an individual and still get this tax-prep assistance. Unions and the military also offer free help, regardless of your pay rate.

No taxation without this representation
The best way to find free tax help is to call the IRS directly at (800) 829-1040. For those who hate being on hold, here are a couple of online sources:

•    The AARP provides lists of programs based on your ZIP code.

•    The National Community Tax Coalition has a state-by-state list of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs from last year, many of which will are likely be active in 2008, according to the site.

So instead of paying for tax help, consider taking advantage of these government-sponsored programs. After all, the e-filing and tax prep assistance are subsidized by your tax dollars.

Finally, we all know -- I hope -- that refund anticipation loans are a terrible idea. If you need money that quickly, then just e-file and opt for direct deposit, for goodness' sake. You'll have your money in as little as 10 days.

And if you take advantage of the advice above, you won't have to shell out $100 or more in prep fees to get it.

The IRS does not charge for a paper return based on income so, why can't they provide an electronic return for free for everybody regardless of income?  E-filing saves the IRS time and money as much as it helps the filer.  Bureaucracy and help do not relly belong in the same sentence.

II would like to know if you owed taxes for 2007 and you have back child support who would get the proposed stimuluis check.

Your rebate check will be reduced by the tax owed. Debby I hope this helps

TO respond to Marylou Ferguson. If you filed your 2007 taxes and claimed the child as your dependant you would get the rebate for yourself and the child. If you have not filed your taxes you would not get a check until you file your 2008 taxes in 2009. You will only get the amount for whomever was claimed and any amount still oweing the IRS will be deducted from the check.

We had to relocate to another state due to my husband's job transferring him. His company paid for all of our expenses however, sent us a 1099 for that amount (almost $16K!). How badly will that hurt us on our return? Are we able to claim any of that as expenses even though we didn't pay that out of pocket? Thanks!

It is very interesting to hear many a different views and stories from concerned consumers (ie. hard working taxpayers) about..Tax-in-the-Box, H&R Block, Jackson-Hewitt, etc...Just my opinion here, (a degree in Accounting/Finance) worked at 3 cpa firms and have been involved with alot of different taxes, personal, corp., property taxes, etc...A person/couple needs to decide what is important to them when it comes to taxes.  Professional, cpa help/tax planners that will plan your life into the future that may cost some money or cheap TAX-in-the-Box's (that are very prone to mistakes and stretching of the tax laws and codes, ie. ethics).  Firm, firm believer in "you get what you pay for, most of the time."  Things I have seen come from upset, fearful taxpayers that initially went to Tax-in-the-Box, H&R Block and Jackson-Hewitt lends me to a belief that most people employeed or at least half are "inexperienced and uneducated" to the tax laws and codes and do not ask the right questions of the consumer(s) that walk through the door.  This lends itself to not maximizing or minimizing the tax refund or burden for each consumer, versus a good reputable cpa firm.  All in all, "you get what you pay for 98% of the time...". Thanks for allowing me to help trusting and caring taxpayers according to what I have seen over the years.  Find somebody, run the taste, feel test, and then stick with them year after year after year...

I NEED HELP MY HUSBAND AND I HAVEN'T FILED AN INCOME TAX  STATEMENT SINCE 1999. WHAT DO I DO I NEED FORMS AND W-2 FORMS AND THIS LADY TOLD ME THAT WORKS WITH THE IRS THAT THE IRS WOULD NOT HELP ME. PLEASE HELP.

I have worked in the tax service industry for 8 years (with Jackson Hewitt now) and I think the fees, especially RAL fees are  high.   I am always counseling people to pay up front, direct deposit and wait the 10 days.  Some people, especially low income simply do not want to wait.  They want (not necessarily need) their money NOW.  Tax service companies are simply giving people what they want just like any other company or product does.  Liquor stores and wine shops Alcohol (alcoholics), any convenience or grocery store cigarettes (lung disease),  fast food (fat)  and on and on.  Tax service compaines also spend a lot of money on up to date software, training employees etc to maximize an individuals refund.  In many cases an individual will pay less coming to a "tax in the box" as you call it than going to an accountant.  Talk about expensive!  Have you checked out their prices lately.  Bottom line.......people especially low income people need to take a look as to why they are on the bottom of the totem pole in society and make a choice to wise up.  To "wise up" is a choice that must be decided by every individual.

i have ??? im independent contractoris my 1 time to pay taxi make 13000 but i spent 5500in gas for to pay tax irs sayyou need to pay the tax of13000and no for the money left wich is 8500sombody can help me please

"I was told that I cannot be informed of the fee initially until my total came back for the amount I would receive on my taxes."

That kind of statement reeks of scam...thanks for the warning, sorry you had to find out the hard way.
