As poetloverrebelspy says at Less Than a Shoestring, why pay money for an automobile club membership when you can get highway maps and other tourist information from all 50 states for free. Poet has compiled a convenient list of links at her site. Just click and order away.

We visited a couple of the state Web sites just to see what's available. This is great stuff. Not only can you order free stuff, but you can read tons of information about fun things to do.

From the Department of Transportation in Montana -- one of our favorite places -- you can request a state map, plus a bicycle-touring packet and a "Fly Montana" packet for out-of-state pilots, and read a "winter survival guide." You can type in a question or view FAQs, such as where to call for updated road conditions (always a good thing in the winter), and what the speed limits are (yes, Montana has them). At another Web site, you can request a free Montana vacation planning kit and read about llama treks, dinosaur bones and lots of other Montana attractions.

The Georgia Department of Transportation offers lots of free maps, including a state map, county maps, bicycle and railroad maps, and an aeronautical chart. You can order travel brochures and find other information here.

You can actually download a highway map of Alaska or request a copy here, and you can ask for tourist information by clicking here and filling out a questionnaire about the type of activities you're interested in.
