Lunch for 28 cents a day (if you really like PBJ)

This post is for all of you who complain that you don't have time to make your lunch for work. Clever Dude prepares a month's worth of lunches in an astounding 25 minutes, at a total cost of $6.99.

How does he do it? This guy is the assembly-line king of making peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches. In this very funny post worthy of the blogger's name, he gives step-by-step instructions for assembling 23 sandwiches -- and illustrates the process with photos of each step. When the sandwiches are done, he bags them and pops them in the freezer. He swears they're not mushy when they defrost.

The cost per sandwich ranges from 28 cents for those with grape jelly to 33 cents with more expensive jam. "Do you know how much Panera charges for a PBJ sandwich?" he asks. "Well, I don't either because they're too embarrassed to print it on their Web site, but I know it's at least $2 to $3 from experience!"

Clever Dude imparts insider tips that only a true PBJ master would know. Consider this: "Wheat bread doesn't absorb the jelly juices like white bread, so your sandwich isn't soggy when it thaws." And where else could you read this? "I recommend stirring up the jelly before spooning it out. It makes spreading it much easier."

He also puts the jelly on top of the peanut butter rather than on the bare slice of bread because it's easier to close the sandwich that way. When you're putting the top on, he says, "a tip is to match up the shape of the top with the bottom so you don't have unneeded overhang. Oh, and yes, I use the crusts."

Clever Dude is very smart!

I also only use wheat and I 'mash up' the jelly as well to eliminate clumps... I learned this through trial and error.

1 more tip- if your sandwich still gets soggy a paper towel or thin cloth on the bottom will soak up the condensation to keep the sandwich fresh.

i love pb sandwiches especially since i got a good protion of my pb free or pretty cheap, but they have too many calories to eat daily (for me anyway) =(

WOW , I LOVE YOUR IDEA. ESPICALLY BEING THAT WE LOVE PBJ'S  .

i JUST NEVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT FREEZING  THEM WHAT AN EXCELLENT IDEA. THANKS FOR THE TIP.

I saw that there are actually pb&j frozen sandwiches on crustless bread that you can buy at Costco for about $1 each. My kids beg me for these and I think it is crazy to waste money on them.  This is a great idea since my kids' lunches are now nearly $6 a day at their school.  I bet if you prepare them on frozen whole wheat bread it would work out great.

spread peanut butter on both sides of frozen whole grain bread put the jelly in the middle  wrap put back in freezer the bread will not get soggy.

Peanut butter is a good source of protein. Jelly gives it that nice touch. And if you have been down a bread aisle lately- there are alot of choices of breads out there. They are definetely the same PBJ sandwiches that we used to eat back in the 70s & 80's.

My peanut butter is tainted with salmonella.  :(

As I read the blogs, It's my hope that the protien from pb&j help to develope the minds of people to spell and use grammer better when blogging. By the way, if I did something wrong with my blog, maybe I should have a pb&j to rectify my situation.

Mr. Herb.....  you should practice what you preach :-)  The word protein is miss-spelled in your blog, Sir.

Buy bread in the bread aisle? Are you kidding me? I make a loaf in our 2lb breadmaker for about $0.50. I get to choose how dark the crust is, and there are TONS of breakmaker recipes and recipe books out there for all sorts of bread types. The trick to getting the price down to $0.50 is to buy bread flour and yeast at Sam's Club or Costco. I get 25 lbs of flour for under $10, and 2 lbs of yeast for under $6. Heck, you pay almost $6 for the little brown jars of yeast at a regular grocery store!
