Tax rebate? Tax bonus? The semantics of spending

If President Bush wants us to spend that tax rebate, he needs to call it a tax "bonus." Or so wrote behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley in a recent New York Times guest column.

"A rebate, psychologically speaking, is the return of a loss of one's own money ... so it is unlikely to be seen as extra spending money," wrote Epley, a professor at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

In one experiment at Harvard, he and some colleagues gave out $50 checks. Half the study participants were told it was a "rebate," while the other half got a "bonus." A week later, the bonus recipients had outspent the rebate crowd by more than 50 percent.

Can simple word choices really make that much difference? Sure they can. The word "budget" makes some people's jaws clench. Somehow the phrase "spending plan" sounds a lot better.

Force vs. choice
"Budget" sounds like deprivation, lack, bean-counting. It feels like something being taken away, namely the ability to spend one's own hard-earned dough.

A "spending plan," on the other hand, is a nice balance of action and autonomy. Here's some money. Plan carefully before spending. But do spend it.

"Budget" is a faceless authority figure hectoring you over every dollar. "Spending plan" is a direction in which those dollars could go -- or, as Smart Spending partner blogger J.D. Roth calls it, "a roadmap for your money."

I like maps better than lectures. The former gives me a chance to direct my own route in life. The latter makes me feel like a naughty child who's about to get grounded, or at least lose dessert privileges.

Call it what you will
When the clock nudges 8 p.m. at a baby-sitting job, here's what I say to the child in my care: "Do you want to read a story before or after you put on your pajamas?"

The fact is, it's bedtime and that's that. But if he feels that he has some choice, however small, there's a lot less whining.

It's the same for us tall kids. There really is no difference between a budget and a spending plan. Yet if a semantical switch is what you need, then use whatever phrase you like. Call it a spending plan or a roadmap or even Bob the Budget, just as long as you take charge of your money.

Track your spending. Craft some financial goals. Implement them. Note your progress. If necessary, retool your goals or -- best-case scenario -- add more.

And as for the tax rebate/bonus? Call that whatever you like, too. Just be sure to factor it into Bob the Budget.

Thanks for this input.  I didn't realize what this stimulus package really is.

I guess it is neither a refund or rebate but a loan. But what do you call it for those who pay no income tax and will not be required to repay? I guess that is just more welfare.

We make $60,000  a year and owe the IRS. So I just sent them a check for my 2007 taxes and I will have to send them almost $2,000 next year. Our check will be $1500 this summer. I will not spend it as I will just have to give it back if this is the case. Oh boy I am looking forward to next tax year!

I hope people pay off their debt.  This is a relief for those that are in a jam.  If you take it and spend it on Plasma TV, buy new Prada purse or just blow it on crack, you are just going to need a bail out again next year anyway.  So for goodness sake, just pay your debt.

I took out a fixed 15 year home loan at 5.25% in 2004 instead of a 4.75% 3/1 ARM because I was responsible and smart enough to know that interest could not stay this low.  But, instead, I am now punished for been so responsible and smart (or in this case stupid).  Those who took the 3/1 ARM so they can get a lower rate...so they can buy a bigger house are the ones that need this refund the most.  Please use it to make an extra payment, I feel stupid enough already, you don't need to throw it in my face by spending this money on crap and have the government come in and bail you out again next year with taxes collected from me this year.  They already lowered the interest rate for you and is sending you extra cash out of my pocket to help you, so please pay what you owe.

I was under the impression that we only have to claim it on our taxes adn only pay taxes on this so called Rebate..need some real clarification....

What haopens to those people who don't get refunds - are they eligible for this?

George Bush ripping us off again, dah bum. trowem all out on their Ear I say. Hooaa

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh It's "Weapon's Of Mass Taxation" we all gonna die. I need a Beer :}

Enough already!! I don't care for smoke in my eyes or anywhere else! This is called lying to yourself and believing all of it. Come on Americans wake up!!!!!! Are we really this stupid?????? Regardless of what you call it.... a bandaid....loan..rebate. It's all to really make it look good.......Isn't It!! When we have 700 billion in the red...... what will 200 million do??????? The next thing you know the illegal imigrants are going to receive twice that amount just because they don't have a green card!!!!!

The worst is yet to come!!!!

GOD BLESS THE U S A!!!!

I think it's rediculious. The government should inform us of the process. I wouldn't have known that I was going to have to pay it back if I wouldn't have found this on the website. Something needs to change with our government.
