News reports of people abandoning their pets in their repossessed homes or dropping IMG_6184 them off at overburdened animal shelters have prompted outrage across the blogosphere. "What is wrong with these people that they just leave them in the home after they have moved out? What is the reasoning behind their thinking?" wrote Texas real estate professional Stephanie Hansson at the Active Rain blog. "I am heartsick and just can't understand."

Some bloggers are urging readers to take action as the foreclosure rate climbs. Deanna Raeke at For the Love of the Dog asked her readers to check the yards and look in the windows of vacant houses to see if pets were left behind. You also can adopt a "foreclosure cat" or dog from your local shelter.

Pets "are getting dumped all over," Traci Jennings, president of the Humane Society of Stanislaus County in northern California, told The Associated Press. "Farmers are finding dogs dumped on their grazing grounds, while house cats are showing up in wild cat colonies." Some shelters are planning to offer temporary housing for evicted pets until their owners can find a pet-friendly place to live. One man didn't leave animals behind but actually introduced some to his former home, according to a story in BusinessWeek. It said: "A man in Eagle Creek, Ore., recently put three 200-pound pigs in his repossessed home. They quickly tore up the place, ripping away the foundation and reducing the back porch to rubble. When police found the pigs, the animals were unharmed but a little cranky."

I recently rescued a dog left behind in a home. A wonderful dog who is smart and friendly. I'm amazed at the amount of stupid lazy people who would simply leave an animal caged and left to die. Stick em all in prison for 3 weeks.

These are the same people that abandon their wife and children when they get tired of being married.  Why would you expect any differnt.

I agree with the comments above.  I myself am in the middle of the mortgage mess, with my home possibly being forclosed.  However, I spent a month or so locating a place to live that would allow me to take my cats (6) with me.  I cannot imagine the horror of being left behind by those that were supposed to love me as family.  It is truly sad!  It does not take but a little effort to find homes for them too!

get real, folks... try being a newly divorced mom of three with two big dogs and just TRY to find a home for yourself, the kids and the pets!!.... it doesn't come easy... or cheap.... the pets HAVE to go... it breaks hearts all around, believe me.... I can easily feel for those families who are losing their homes, having to move into a rental that won't allow pets... how can you fault them for needing to find a shelter for the pets?.... this would be a wonderful time for folks with the room , to advertise to 'foster' a pet for someone in this situation.... tho, I doubt I'd trust anyone that I didn't know... so maybe not.... I just wish them all the best of luck in their search for help....

WELL IF THEY DO FEED THR CAT OR DOGS MAYBE THERE NO FEEDING THE KIDS TOO YOU SHOULD HAVE A COPS LOOKIN TO IT A LITTLE MORE THANK YOU

This is ridiculous, is this the new generation that will run our country? God help us.

It's amazing that you actually believe there is a god, first for the banks to screw these people out of their life's dream and for them to abandon animals in the process - get real there is no god.

I think people should be feeling sorry also for the people that are losing their homes.

I know it is a terrible thing to leave the poor animals without a home and people should do right by them. They should not trash the homes . I imagine people are so upset they do not care and obviously not animal lovers which is a shame.

The American dream, own your own home, maybe a dog and a cat. The problem is that people don't think. Yeah everyone is baming the mortgage companies, but maybe we need to look at ourselves. Someone who would abandon an animal probably doesn't have what it takes to own a home. There is a lot of responsibility in owning a home and it is not a decision to take lightly. If someone offers you a deal that is too good to be true it probably isn't. To get a motgage with no money down and low monthly payments, if you don't read the fine print you only have yourself to blame. We need to start taking some of the responsibility for our own stupidity, and the people who cannot do that are the ones not responsible enough to care for their animals either.

Isn't everyone happy that Bush and Cheney were re-elected?  sigh...
