News reports of people abandoning their pets in their repossessed homes or dropping IMG_6184 them off at already overburdened animal shelters have prompted outrage across the blogosphere. "What is wrong with these people that they just leave them in the home after they have moved out? What is the reasoning behind their thinking?" wrote Texas real estate professional Stephanie Hansson at the Active Rain blog. "I am heartsick and just can't understand."

Some bloggers are urging readers to take action as the foreclosure rate climbs. Deanna Raeke at For the Love of the Dog asked her readers to check the yards and look in the windows of vacant houses to see if pets were left behind. You also can adopt a "foreclosure cat" or dog from your local shelter.

Pets "are getting dumped all over," Traci Jennings, president of the Humane Society of Stanislaus County in northern California, told The Associated Press. "Farmers are finding dogs dumped on their grazing grounds, while house cats are showing up in wild cat colonies." Some shelters are planning to offer temporary housing for evicted pets until their owners can find a pet-friendly place to live. One man didn't leave animals behind but actually introduced some to his former home, according to a story in BusinessWeek. It said: "A man in Eagle Creek, Ore., recently put three 200-pound pigs in his repossessed home. They quickly tore up the place, ripping away the foundation and reducing the back porch to rubble. When police found the pigs, the animals were unharmed but a little cranky."

This is so sad it is amazing how cruel humans can be.

It is shameful!!!!!!

How can people do that!  I foster dogs and I can tell you my house is not going to be empty of pets anytime soon.

I have rehabbed homes ruined by people leaving several dogs and cats in them for an extended time only stopping by to give water and food.  I wonder if this may have another motive...........Like ruining the house! A 200k home can have it's value cut in half or more...........disgusting.  If the people can't find pet friendly places to move then the animals should be taken to a shelter or I hate to say it...have them put down.

I wonder what God is thinking when he sees people abandon his creatures? These defenseless animals did nothing but love unconditionally. What was their crime?  I think their owners should be banned from ever being allowed to own another living creature. I also think a No Kill Shelter is the best alternative if someone finds an abandoned or abused pet. They didn’t ask to be born and as responsible animal lovers it is our duty to see they have a chance in life before some euthanizing shelter decides their fate. That is the job of our Creator!

Not for nothing this  goes to show the lack of compassion people have for anything. How a society treats animals is directly related to how it truly realtes to other humans. Look at the story that broke a few days ago about the cows being tortured to walk to their own death  are their lives any less value than these cats and dogs being left behind we as A " CIVILIZED SOCITEY" need to step back take a look re-evaluate and start over

people are sick.  animals aren't disposable beings, they are beautiful, loving family members who deserve to be treated with respect.  before people should be permitted to own a pet they should be put through a series of evaluations to see if they are worthy of having a pet.  if someone is forced to move they should be forced to find a new home where pets are allowed.  I see pets for adoption in our local paper each week who's owners didn't bother to find a home where they could take their pets.  would they leave their CHILDREN in a home after they moved out or drop them at an orphanage?  I don't think so.  same thing people!!

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE LEAVING ANMAILS.I WATCH THE ANIMAL CHANEL ON TV AND I CRY.I HAVE A CAT AND AM MOVEING TO A APARTEMENT AND MY CAT GOES WITH ME.PEOPLE JUST DON'T HAVE A HEART.WHY CANT'T THEY DROP THEM AT THE SHELTER.

after watching animal planet, nothing surprises me. You gotta figure, that if man's inhumanity to his and her own kind is bad then what they do to lower animals is at least 10 fold. Thank god that these kinds of humans are in the minority.

With foreclosures at such an alarming high rate I am not surprised by this story.  The owners should be held responsible if they CHOOSE to leave their beloved pets behind.  Fines should be issued and in some cases bring animal cruelty charges if the case results in the animals death.  Do the right thing, if you can't take your pet with you at least be merciful and take them to a shelter.  The animals can't fend for themselves, they depend on us for that.

i dont know how anyone could leave their anumals behind my cat is a seal-point siamese and he is like one of my kids hes family if we leave simon is coming with us thats awful people are leaving their animals behind i guess its the way people are brought up geez treat others as you would want to be treated would you want to be abnadoned , left behind nobody would want that so for petes sake dont do it to your animal they rely on us to take care of them animals are like lil babies they need us to feed them and bathe them and love them thats what they are here for if you do this they will love you back so much
