We agree with the Silicon Valley Blogger, who guarantees that you'll save money if you begin following the 16 grocery-shopping tips posted at The Digerati Life. For instance, how many of you check the expiration date on foods before you put them in your cart? (A related tip from us: If the store employees are stocking properly, the items with the closest expiration date will be at the front of the display case or shelf, so go to the back to find items that will last longer.) SVB advises that you "check unit pricing." So true. You're not necessarily getting a better bargain when you buy the larger bottle of dish detergent. Look at the unit price, and you may find that the smaller one costs less per ounce.
Check your receipt before you leave the store. You'd be surprised how often an item is scanned incorrectly at checkout. We know. We paid for two jars of soy butter (yes, people, soy, and it tastes good) on Saturday although we bought only one. "Comparison shop," SVB advises. The store brand often tastes or works just like the brand name, and costs a lot less. Another great tip: "Don't shop hungry" because otherwise you'll likely spend more. We recommend that you eat shortly before you shop. If you're not hungry when you walk in the store, you will be when they bake the cinnamon rolls or fry the chicken.
