A debit card thief is 'scum'

We hope the creep who took Glblguy's debit card reads his post at Gather Little by Little. It contains a personal message: "You are a thief, and in my opinion pure scum." Total damage done: $877.35, including $280 in overdraft fees. What made matters worse is that Glblguy and family were on a mini-vacation and ended up running out of funds. "Fortunately we had enough gas to make it home, but just barely," he writes. What did he learn from this experience? He needs better access to his emergency funds, and it's probably best to take extra cash on trips. He says, "I even considered carrying a credit card again." Luckily he called his bank when he first noticed the charges, and it made good on the stolen amount and canceled the overdraft fees.

Mrs. Micah realized she'd misplaced her debit card when it came time to pay at a get-together with Clever Dude, mapgirl and Plonkee, who was visiting from England. (That must have been quite the PF blogger gabfest.) She took two steps that she recommends: Check your online account for unauthorized purchases, and have the bank freeze your card while you search for it. Meanwhile, No Credit Needed lost his wallet. It was found by a prisoner on a roadside work detail after the wallet had been shredded by a mower. (We're glad NCN no longer carries his Social Security card in his wallet.)

Idiot, you should always cary a credit card for emergencies, or at least a few hundered dollars in cash if you dont want to carry a credit card.

Thanks so much for the mention, Donna! :) Fortunately, I found the card the next day, had it unfrozen, and everything's fine now.

Um, I'm not sure if the "idiot" was directed at me, but I don't live in an area where carrying $100 is cash is a good idea. Kind of a simplistic approach, though I'm sure it works very well in some places. I did have a checkbook, which meant losing the card was only an inconvenience since it wasn't stolen like Gather Little By Little Guy's. :)

I read your full article at Gather Little By Little. I had a very similar experience but I never caught the scum…Anyways the best of luck to you friend I hope you find him.  Just don’t let this pursuit turn into an obsession.
