Personal-finance bloggers who confess their bonehead moves online are usually anonymous; we don't know their real names. The Frugal Duchess' full name and photograph are right there on her blog, and she still has the daring to share her "10 bubblehead career errors" and give us the bottom line for each one. We can't blame her for not paying attention in typing class. How could she have foreseen computers and e-mail all those many years ago. The innocence of youth kept her from taking even one business class in college. But what about all the hours in the beauty shop chair? "Why did I waste those billable hours?" she wonders. And how about those reading choices? She writes: "I had a stack of books with different titles, but the same themes: 1. Please make him love me; 2. How to Find Prince Charming 101; 3) How to fix your broken heart, and finally, my least favorite: 4) How to break his heart. OMG!" Bottom line here: "You are what you read."
In the mid-'80s, she ignored a friend's advice to study up on computers. In 1991, a geek at her dinner table explained what we all now refer to as the Internet; she yawned and kept eating. Bottom line? "Recognize prophecy when it's served at your own table."
