Search Smart Spending:

As the saying goes, don't shoot the messenger

Blogger Ramit Sethi at I Will Teach You To Be Rich was intrigued -- actually annoyed -- by an e-mail from a reader who said, "Your advice is not for real people like me." (By "your," he meant personal-finance bloggers collectively. "People like me" in this case means a 30-something guy with a good job, a wife in med school, two kids, a mortgage, two car payments, child care,  utilities, and various and sundry expenses.) We won't give away their entire exchange, but it ended with the reader's honest assessment: "I want to -- and do, for the most part -- give my wife and kids whatever they want. Until I stop doing that, the whole saving more, spending less thing won’t work for me." That's exactly the advice PF bloggers have for "people like me."

My question is "Is Ramit rich?".  I have been thinking about starting a blog because I think it would be nice to take advice from people who have hit milestones that others want to hit.  Without bragging, I have been fortunate enough to hit a big milestone through hard work, saving, and investing.  I have made sacrifices to get there.

I would rather take advice on how to do something from someone who has done it rather than someone who is trying to do it.

No offense to Ramit, but if he is going to teach someone to be rich, he better be rich himself. The question is, is he?
