Extreme frugal living: Move into an RV

Jacob at Early Retirement Extreme is about to cut his already spartan monthly living expenses in half. How? He and his wife are moving into an RV.

This blog is called Early Retirement Extreme for a reason. Jacob, a guy in his early 30s, spent five years saving and investing 70% of his income on his way to a goal of quitting the rat race, and now he's going to save even more.

Here's how he explains his goal: "Six years ago, I decided that a lifestyle based on bills, mortgages, retirement plans, and conspicuous consumption that depended on working a job for 30 more years or maybe even the rest of my life was not for me."

He and his wife are nearly financially independent, but wanted to cut living expenses further and increase savings. Thus, they came up with the RV plan. They bought a 1991 34-foot recreational vehicle (289 square feet) with 58,000 miles, paying $14,200 -- in cash, naturally. Their rent for the parking space will be much less than they were paying for an apartment in the Bay area.

"It has wheels," Jacob writes. "It also has everything we typically use in our rental except wasted space."

(Jacob originally considered a tiny Tumbleweed house -- an idea we find very appealing -- but his wife wasn't enthusiastic.)

How does this lifestyle work? He explains some of it in a post called "How do I get my spouse to go along with my frugal plans?" (For more information, read "How to retire in 5 years.") Here are a few details:

He knows that living like this is not for everyone. "Of course there are some compromises," he writes, tongue-in-cheek. "You can't have a media room. You can't have a home gym. Also you have to say goodbye to the bowling alley in the basement you just financed with a second mortgage."

David, if you are considering a job writing commentary for a living I have some good advise: keep your day job. As for the R.V. living, great idea, albeit not for everyone. Me, I sold my gas-guzzling work vehicle for a six cylinder stick shift. I am getting double the gas mileage and loving it. I buy as much as possible from the big bulk stores and cook at home. Gave up T.V. years ago so no more cable bill and dumped my land line in favor of my cell phone. No more long distance charges either. If you are creative, you will figure out how to stretch a dollar. Drive on, Jacob!!!

Im 29 been working hard for ten years in the car business have two houses almost paid off here in San Diego live in one have plenty of cash 100k in my 401k and bought some beach property in Baja and im not living in a rat whole  or asking for a bicycle I am a little in debt but will be out soon never got a penny from no one worked my behind of of course my wife and i accomplished this awesome adventure in only ten years focused and positive with the ups and downs of life and we have two angels 11 and 12 at the same time mmmmmmmm and  dont be hater people.... grow up be happy " Attitude is everything" Keith Harold great book.

People, simply read these posts and it is pretty evident WHY we all, for the most part, are having to live more frugally!  Education!  At least most, if any, spelling errors are from my Gulf War Syndrome and numb fingers hitting keys mistakenly...seriously!  Read through all these posts, aside from a few that are smart enough to comment on it and even then cannot spell!?!  Our own President cannot say nuclear and some of you posters have a problem with Obama not wanting to make English the official language!  Educate yourself and look around!  We have sold out our country to the world and only now are really experiencing the fallout.

And to you pompous lottery winners and property owners slopping up the fallout from the mortgage crisis:  How about doing something for your community rather than being a fat cat in an RV! How about riding scooters instead of non-compremise on luxury?  Europe and most of the rest of the world has been doing this for decades since WWII.  I have a Tomos LX 49cc scooter that looks exactly like a motorcycle but has a top speed of 30 MPH, 35 if I use an octane booster, getting 110 MPG and laughing all the way to the grocery store and back.  We Americans need to adjust our groove because it is only the beginning of the quagmire we are in!  The NeoCONS have rigged the petroleum futures, even got OPEC to have last week's emergency meeting to do the oxymoronic thing; Withhold production by 100 Million barrels to ensure gas steadies at $4-4.50 a gallon.  Oil reserves are actually coming more from other places on the planet, having nothing to do with OPEC and the free market.  We have allowed ourself to be manipulated out of fear and our near-trillion dollar deficit has to be paid somehow, and those high-rollers just might finally have to start paying their fair shair of taxes!

Peace,

Robert

P.S.

We started doing mobility exercises for a full year BEFORE Sadam invaded Kuwait--you do the math and calculate the present consequences.

Hello folks, I have been a camper most of my life and here is how I see this. I have an uncle that lives in the "system" permanent camper. He has a 350 ford diesel pick-up to pull his 34 foot 5th wheel camper. I have been in a van club since the 70s. We camp in our vans and tag along campers. Yes im an old hippie/baby boomer now retired. Ill do the cons first. The first thing is 2 weeks (14) days is all that is allowed in campgrounds as a stay. Then ya gotta move on. Campgrounds now charge extra for many things. Ya want electric, on site dump, how many bumps on yer rig (slide outs) ,ya want a pull thru site, yer rig is how long?   All extra per DAY! Now in some parks if you have a long rig ya got problems navigating the grounds to your site and now in your space there is a tree where your slide out is. Hmmm. You need to be camper educated! Watch Robin Williams in that movie its funny but campers understood the possibilitites. Especially the dump station. You have to plan all the time. Where is the next campground its time to move. They dont mow or clean around your camper till you move. you move in to new site and get the neighbor from hell. Fuel prices for moving and how many mile on the move at 8 or less mpg.

Lets look at good sides. Retired you can move with the seasons and be where its comfortable. You do get to meet a wide varity of people, from the worst to the most astute. I saw in Florida they are building mini condos in titusville that have a huge carport for your rig and a small condo right at you camper door. (But isnt not owning what we were after?) Travel is fun, seeing new places and faces. Camper clubs are out there and travel together, this is nice to have familiar folks along on the escapade.

These are just a few things that came to mind, I hope it makes you more aware of whats involved I havnt seen mentioned. Ill say happy set ups and tear downs for the moves. its worth it to see all the differant places and things to do out there but dont sell the house till you have experianced the hassles that go along with camper life.

GO RVING FIRST      GODSPEED

To Michael,

while we are thaking iran and iraq, what about kuwait? We saved them and what thanks do we get from them.....NADA. i figure same from the rest.

my wife and I have thought about doing just that. We have a lot 50 yds from the ICW(intracoastal waterway) one less rat for the race? sounds ok to me. 10 more years till the kids are done with school, and we're there. lifestyle and freedom beats an overpriced house, luxury car, and $200 shirts. I'm in. sign me up

I have lived in an RV for over a year now and it is cheap but not without problems, Think about utilitiy bills and other things and I may decide to go bigger.I got foreclosed on a year ago but unlike the Banks (Indy Mac) I had no bailout!

DONT CARE FOR THIS LIVING CHEAP BUT I AGREE R.V. IS THE BEST    I WON A HUGE LOTTERY ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO STILL HAVE EVERY PENNY BY WISE CAUTIOUS INVESTING,THEN TO TOP IT ALL OFF I SOLD MY COMPANY TO A MAJOR CHEMICAL CONGLOMERATE FOR OVER 60 MILLION DOLLARS   I HAVE AN R.V. BUT IT COST ME 750000.00  AND IT DOES HAVE A MEDIA ROOM  GO GET EM JACOB  !!!!!  IN A COUPLE OF YEARS YOU MAY EVEN GET A LARGER WINNIE  AND HAVE 300 SQ FT.
